Finishing 9-3 after a tough second round state playoff game to Fort Myers Dunbar sent the district champion Titans into the off season with a great feeling.
While a coaching change was made, the objective has never changed for new head coach Nick Citro, who succeeded Nick Bigica, who coached the program for the last five seasons. Bigica finished with a 24-26 record following the best season in program history. But it was also Golden Gate’s most controversial season, as a recruiting scandal put a damper on the season.
Citro moved to Southwest Florida in 2019 from New Jersey, joining the Naples Palmetto Ridge staff which had its best season in 2020. He then joined James Delgado’s staff at Immokalee in 2022, helping build the program back after it was forced to go independent in 2021. The Indians won the Class 4S-District 16 title this past season.
This is a program that comes back with plenty of talent and a belief that getting one step further could indeed be a reality.
With the start of spring football, the memories of beating Naples, dropping a tough game to defending 1S state champion Naples First Baptist and a stretch run that saw them win six straight is very much in play.
The rising senior (2025) class will certainly be a starting point. Several key prospects return and will be ready to make another statement.
