No other sport is better for finding hidden gems on the football field than on the track. Here are a few standouts from the handful of track events in early February.
Javon Broussard
Javon Broussard
6’2 175 WR/DB Wheeler
Broussard recently ran a 11.05 in the 100m, finishing 2nd in the event. He will easily break the 11 mark as the temps heat up in Spring.
The 6’2 WR/DB was 2nd Team All Region last season in 5-7A, Georgia’s highest classification. Long and lean with room to add good weight. Good vertical route downfield receiver. Uses his speed to out run defenders and his height to out jump them. Makes good adjustments on the ball in flight. Good hand that quickly gets up to top speed after the catch adding positive YAC. Definitely has the size and speed to be a prospect at the next level. Big Senior season on tap.
Daniel Okonkwo
Daniel Okonkwo
6’0 195 ATH Hillgrove
Okonkwo ran a 11.18 in the 100m to finish 4th in the event.
The 6’0 195 DB has a solid build and does a good job in 1v1 coverage. Solid back peddle and gets his hips around quick. Does a good job forcing the receiver to the sideline boundary. Good ball awareness with quick hands that leads to PBUs.
He missed half of last season at Hillgrove with an injury but is back 100% for 2024. Has been hitting the camp circuit early this off season and looks ready to have a successful Senior season on the football field. Keep an eye on his track numbers as the Spring heats up.
Dylan Villarouel
Dylan Villarouel
6’4 310 OL North Forsyth
I can’t say Villarouel is a hidden gem because he has garnered attention from every D1 program in the South. He recently added an offer from Navy and is a guaranteed D1 offensive lineman prospect.
The 6A All State HM threw a 41’7.8 in the shotput in his recent meet giving him a 3rd place finish in the event.
On the football field he uses his good lower body strength and long reach to keep the defensive lineman at bay. He sets his feet well in pass protection and is an aggressive blocker in run support. He has been working hard in the weight room the last few seasons, transforming his body and getting stronger, recently power cleaned 285. With another good off season, Villarouel could easily find himself on the All State team in 2024. A college program will be getting a guy they can develop into a heck of an OL down the road.
6’2 210 LB Carrollton
Gamble is a big time LB prospect in the 2026 class. He recently threw a personal best 43’9 in the shotput, finishing 3rd in the event.
The GACA Sophomore All Star is aggressive tackler from either the outside or at the middle position. Only a Soph last season but carries himself as an upperclassmen on the field. Great student off the field with a 3.8 GPA and a workout warrior in the weight room, recently squatting 505. Started as a Soph, and saw considerable playing time as a Freshman, on one of the most talented high school rosters in the State.
Gamble is already receiving interest from several FBS programs and would not be surprised to see him show up as a National recruit after the 2024 season.
