As schools continue to put the finishing touches to their recruiting classes, there are still several hidden gems among the 2024 class, who I believe can make an impact at the next level. So I decided to start the “DON’T SLEEP” series, where I will highlight some sleepers in the 2024 class.
Check out these four seniors that are still flying under the radar! DON’T SLEEP!!
Nathanieal Werner Nathanieal Werner 6'0" | 260 lbs | DL Boone Central | 2024 State NE | 2024 | DL/OL | Boone Central | 6’0″ 260 lbs
Nathanieal was one of the big enforcers in the trenches for a Cardinals defense that gave up less than 5 points per game and pitched seven shutouts en route to claiming the C1 championship. Werner capped off his senior season with 21 tackles, 9 TFLs, and a sack but made an impact deeper than the stat sheet. He’s a very disruptive 3-tech who displayed his effectiveness as a run-stopper and can apply pressure on opposing QBs. Nathanieal’s strength and fast-draw hands allow him to strike first and strike hard when making initial contact. He has a strong anchor and solid length (6’6″ wingspan), which he uses to stonewall blockers in their spots before swiping them away to pursue the ball. Great pursuit, tracks the ball very well, and has a high-intensity motor! Not too late to swipe this guy up!
Austyn Cote Austyn Cote 5'8" | 165 lbs | LB Ashland-Greenwood | 2024 State NE | 2024 | LB/S | Ashland-Greenwood | 5’8″ 175 lbs
Easily one of the players due for a big jump in the next update! Watching Austyn’s tape, it’s impossible to overlook the fire he plays with on every down. The passion matches the production for Austyn as he racked up a monster 105 tackles, 10 TFLs, recorded four sacks, and recovered a fumble. Austyn is a very rangy player who can cover the field both sideline-to-sideline and attack north-south. Cote does an excellent job trusting his instincts and is very smart with his gap play, acting quickly to plug up his assigned gap. He’s very slippery and doesn’t seem to get held up a lot at the line of scrimmage. Great pursuit— Cote flows to the ball with ease and is a lock to bring his man down when he gets to his spot. Cote plays inside linebacker for the Bluejays, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in more of a safety/box safety role at the next level. The mentality you want to have on your college roster!
Naz Robinson Naz Robinson 5'6" | 150 lbs | RB Hastings | 2024 State NE | 2024 | RB | Hastings | 5’6″ 160 lbs
Senior RB Naz Robinson Naz Robinson 5'6" | 150 lbs | RB Hastings | 2024 State NE quietly had a very productive senior year amidst a very successful season for the Tigers. The Hastings RB toted the rock 160 times for 815 yards and scored ten rushing touchdowns while also showing off his receiving abilities with 16 receptions for 144 yards. The thing about Naz’s game that stood out was his toughness and willingness to fight for extra yards on each carry. He’s a smaller back but can also use that to his advantage, running with a low center of gravity and strong base to keep him upright through contact. He’s very twitchy in the open field and showed that he can make defenders miss in 1-on-1 situations. Good athlete who can develop into a serviceable all-purpose back at the next level.
Leolani Phillip Leolani Phillip 5'11" | 220 lbs | DL South Sioux City | 2024 State NE | 2024 | DL | South Sioux City | 5’11” 220 lbs
I have limited film on South Sioux City’s Leolani Phillip Leolani Phillip 5'11" | 220 lbs | DL South Sioux City | 2024 State NE , but I was impressed with the clips available and what I’ve seen in the few SSC games I’ve watched. Phillip only appeared in 5 games for the Cardinals but still registered 12 tackles, a TFL, and a sack. What catches my eye is his quickness off the ball and his quick twitch when rushing off the edge. Although he isn’t super lengthy, Leo is fast to shoot his hands, allowing him to disengage from blocks. Strong player. Definitely, a player who can develop into a strong defensive presence at the next level!
