South Florence dispatched its 18th straight opponent. Summerville proved it wasn’t close to done. And Oceanside Collegiate and Hampton County kept their seemingly destined collision course on track.
Those teams each were led by some terrific individual performances. Clearly, this week’s Game Balls in the Grand Strand/Pee Dee and Lowcountry were well deserved.
Zion Dobson Zion Dobson 5'10" | 175 lbs | RB Hampton County | 2024 State SC RB, Hampton County – Dobson (pictured) didn’t have the best start in Friday’s 37-21 win over Andrew Jackson, but how he finished was what mattered most. Dobson ended his night with 152 rushing yards and four touchdowns against the Volunteers, pushing Hampton County to the Class 2A Lower State final against Oceanside Collegiate.
Will Virgilio ATH, Oceanside Collegiate – Speaking of strong performances in that bracket, look no further than Virgilio. Against Barnwell, the junior finished the game with eight carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns and seven receptions for 154 yards. His numbers in both categories led the Landsharks and proved this team could continue to advance again without quarterback Edward Reidenbach, who was lost for the year earlier this month.
Syree Livingston RB, South Florence – We’re not sure there’s a hotter player in the state heading into next week Upper and Lower State finals. Livingston added four more touchdown runs and another 169 rushing yards in the third-round win over Lancaster. That gives him 19 rushing touchdowns in the last seven games, including 11 in three rounds of the postseason alone.
Trae Green Trae Green 5'10" | 190 lbs | RB Summerville | 2024 State SC RB, Summerville – The first time Green went up against Carolina Forest this year, he finished with 98 yards on 22 carries and another 13 yards on a pair of receptions. He didn’t reach the end zone. Friday was a different story. The senior had his best game of the year, rushing for 249 yards and five touchdowns in the 63-35 win that propelled the Green Wave to the Class 5A Lower State finals next week at White Knoll.
Kalil Johnson Kalil Johnson 5'7" | 160 lbs | RB Carolina Forest | 2024 State SC RB, Carolina Forest – Green’s night overshadowed that of Johnson, especially since the Green Wave won and the Panthers’ season came to and end. But we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that the Carolina Forest senior put up one more strong highlight reel, rushing for 134 yards and three scores on 18 carries. It was the eighth and final 100-yard game for Johnson this season. He ended the year with 1,601 yards and 19 touchdowns and was very much a huge part of Horry County’s last remaining playoff team.
