Today’s first game of a huge triple-header featured two elite scoring teams in the 12-0 Stanton Mustangs and 11-1 EMF Bobcats.
What was expected to be a stellar game, did not disappoint as both teams exchanged blows and we saw several lead changes. In the end, the Stanton Mustangs emerged victorious in a 42-36 win and took home their first state championship in school history.
Check out the players who stood out to me:
Player of the Game:
Barrett Wilke Barrett Wilke 6'0" | 195 lbs | ATH Stanton | 2025 State NE | 2025 | QB/ATH | Stanton | 5’11” 200 lbs
– 135 passing yards, 250 rushing yards, 3 passing touchdowns, 3 rushing touchdowns, 7 total tackles, a forced fumble, and a PBU.
– With all the huge plays that Barrett made for some reason the interception thrown stood out the most… and not in a negative way. Wilke’s response to the INT was phenomenal as he seemed to enter a different zone and would go on to score three more times.
– Dominant on the ground. Barrett runs the ball with a ton of power and is incredibly hard to bring down on initial contact.
– He explodes through his lanes and displays great acceleration when he hits the open field.
Notable Players:
Breckan Schluter Breckan Schluter 6'1" | 195 lbs | RB Exeter-Milligan | 2024 State NE | 2024 | RB/LB | EMF | 6’1″ 205 lbs
– 39 carries, 266 rushing yards, 5 rushing touchdowns, 10 tackles, and 2.5 TFLs.
– An undeniably gritty player who seemed to do it all for the Bobcats.
– Breckan’s vision really stood out as he seemed to seamlessly find creases and lanes to sneak through for solid gains. Very patient runner— allows his blocks to break down in front of him.
– Defensively, Schluter did a great job disengaging from blocks at the line of scrimmage and shows that he can be disruptive in the backfield with 2.5 TFLs. Great downhill defender.
Mitchell Hupp Mitchell Hupp 6'3" | 190 lbs | TE Stanton | 2024 State NE | 2024 | TE/LB | Stanton | 6’3″ 185 lbs
– 4 receptions, 79 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns, and 15 tackles (team-high).
– One of the x-factors on a very talented Stanton team!
– Mitchell’s 4.4 speed allows him to slip past defenses, which he did on a couple of big plays.
– Big frame allows him to body up defenders and make plays above the rim. Elevates very well and maintains solid concentration through the catch.
– Hupp also displayed his massive outside linebacker potential by leading the team in tackles. He does an excellent job sealing off the edge against the run. Very lengthy and can create separation from blocks with ease.
Jacob Weber | 2024 | ATH | EMF
– 14 tackles, a TFL, and a PBU.
– Plays a versatile linebacker/safety role.
– Had some great reps in coverage including a PBU that saved what would’ve been a long gain by Stanton.
– This was my first real good look at Jacob and was left very impressed by his performance today. Would definitely like to see more of Jacob on tape!
Jordan Claussen | 2025 | ATH | Stanton | 5’9″ 155 lbs
– One reception, 56 receiving yards, a receiving touchdown, 7 tackles, and an interception.
– Jordan came through big time on both sides of the ball with two big plays that were able to snatch momentum back for the Mustangs.
– He showed off his receiving ability with an incredible over-the-shoulder catch and run for a 56-yard touchdown.
– Jordan again showed off his excellent hands and concentration with a diving interception. This interception fueled the Mustangs moving forward with a touchdown next play and never looked back.
– Very smart football player who seemed to be at the right place at the right time throughout the game.
Michael Bartu | 2024 | FB/LB | EMF |
– 10 carries, 73 rushing yards, 11 tackles, and TFL.
– Bartu’s running gave EMF a thunderous 1-2 punch in the ground game.
– Micahel is a very physical player who can lower the pads and dish out some punishment on his runs.
– Fills his gaps very well and has a sturdy frame that allows him to not lose ground when he meets a back in the hole.
Becker Pohlman Becker Pohlman 5'11" | 195 lbs | ATH Stanton | 2025 State NE | 2025 | ATH | Stanton | 6’0″ 195 lbs
– 4 carries, 34 rushing yards, 13 tackles and a forced fumble.
– Becker dealt with nagging injuries throughout the game which hampered his offensive production, however, he proved to still be a force on defense.
– Great range. Pohlman can close on the ball very quickly and is a sure tackler when he gets to his target.
– Very gap smart player.
