Coffee Trojans
One of the top programs in South Georgia this year, the Trojans are off to a big 5-0 start and look like they can make a serious playoff run in 5A the way they’re playing. Defensively, they haven’t been scored on for the last two weeks and have not given up more than 20 points all season long. They can still progress offensively, but this is a hard-nosed team that grinds out win after win. They play with effort, pride, and with South Georgia toughness. They have big wins this year over Bainbridge, Tift County, Bolles (FL), Salem, and Richmond Hill. They haven’t started region play yet, but right now, they look like the best team in 5A Region
Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans
One of the more consistent 5A programs in Gwinnett County, the Spartans are scoring at will so far this season on their way to a 6-0 record with wins over Meadowcreek, Lovett, Pace Academy, Decatur, Northview, and Cambridge. They’re playing great football right now, winning their last three games by double-digits. They run the ball well, rushing for just under 1,200 yards a game so far this season. Veteran QB Jack Stanton has led the way at quarterback, throwing for at least 185 yards in four games this season with 14 touchdowns. They should be able to win the region title with a win over Kell later this season.
Cartersville Purple Hurricanes
One of the top programs in North Georgia, the Cartersville program is one that consistently finds ways to win and make a deep playoff run. And this year shouldn’t be any different. Led by a strong rushing attack and promising play of sophomore QB Nate Rusell, along with excellent defensive, the Hurricanes are off to an impressive 6-0 record while being 1-0 in region play. Defensively, Cartersville still hasn’t given up more than 20 points all season. They play physical, fundamental football and have a big game this weekend against Cass. They’re playing in a really tough region, so every game from here on out in region play is a big one.
Hiram Hornets
One of the top teams in West Georgia, the Hornets are scoring in bunches this year and are putting up big-time points every Friday night. They have talent all over the roster and they’re just crushing teams on a weekly basis. They’ve beat four teams so far this year by 20+ points and have won some tight ballgames as well against Dalton and East Paulding. They’ve also reached the 40-point mark in five of their first six games. They’re currently 6-0 and 1-0 in region play. Along with wins over Dalton and East Paulding, they’ve also won games against Paulding County, Woodstock, Morrow, and Drew.
Jefferson Dragons
Led by one of the very best players in the country in 5-star RB/LB Sammy Brown Sammy Brown 6'2" | 225 lbs | ATH Jefferson | 2024 State GA , the Jefferson Dragons are a legitimate state championship contender in 5A this year. They’re 6-0 right now and 2-0 in region play. They can win tight games, but they’ve also shown the ability to blow teams out when they play at their best. They have wins over Alpharetta, Wren (SC), St. Pius, Oconee County, Clarke Central, and Winder Barrow. They know how to win, and should have no problem winning the 5A Region 8 title this season.
