Illinois has a special group of senior running backs coming through the system this year. We have seen a few of the top athletes commit, but there are a handful of top prospects still on the market. Those athletes also have put together seasons that have led to team success and playoff berths. Today, we are going to look at the tape of the top uncommitted senior RBs ready to make a run at a State Championship. Let’s dive in!
We list Tony as an RB, but the senior has spent 2023 showing that he is a playmaker wherever you put him. His vision with the ball in his hands not only allow shim to quickly pick through the front seven as he finds seams to daylight, but also a dangerous kick returner. Phillips also has the ability to split out in the slot and give safeties and LBs a lot of trouble. His elite speed allows him to instantly pull away. Tony tracks the ball very well for an athlete who doesn’t primarily focus on the WR position. He also as impressive hands. The more ways you can find to get Tony the ball in space the better. I can’t wait to see what the high quality talent does in the playoffs.

Aaron looks like he is on his way towards building a frame that could carry a good sized workload at the next level. After watching the film, I came away impressed with how explosive the senior RB is. He is decisive, accelerates through the hole, and is able to juke or hit a cut while maintaining an high level of speed. Ball has strong instincts, and looks at home while picking through the front seven. No question, the senior has the speed to break off the big play when he gets outside the tackles and into space. Aaron plays at a speed different than the rest of the field. I’m looking for a big postseason from Aaron.

College teams looking for a bigger back should tap into the tape of Derrick Stewart Derrick Stewart 6’0″ | 230 lbs | RB St. Rita | 2024 State IL . The senior has plenty of highlights showing him making the game changing big plays, but the main reason why teams should be intrigued is because of the clips showing his physicality that matches the size. Stewart is unphased by high body tackle attempts or arm tackles. The big back is able to absorb contact, and his low center of gravity keeps him balanced allowing his feet to keep churning. Derrick is a tone setter to watch.

An under the radar prospect that I believe is going to have a huge postseason is Wauconda’s Connor Vanselow Connor Vanselow 6’0″ | 170 lbs | RB Wauconda | 2024 State IL . The senior is a patient running back with next level vision. Connor finds blocks, cut back lanes, sets up defenders, and is patient with the ball in his hands. The senior has a well balanced slew of moves to create yards downfield. He can shake defenders in space, has a stiff arm to keep defenders at bay, and he has enough speed to make the game changing long runs. This is one to watch this postseason.
