It is shaping up to be the year of the tailback, after all.
However, we also found a future college defender who was able to concentrate on his preferred side of the ball and a quarterback who may have just put together his breakout performance.
Kalil Johnson Kalil Johnson 5'7" | 160 lbs | RB Carolina Forest | 2024 State SC RB, Carolina Forest – If this is how region play is going to go for Johnson, a whole lot of Panther fans are in. The tailback continued his hot senior season by kicking off the Region V-5A opener with his best career game, rushing for 239 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries against Conway. The output pushed him past 1,000 yards for the year while elevating him to 2,240 career rushing yards and 28 all-time touchdowns on the ground.
Kelvin Hunter Kelvin Hunter 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB West Florence | 2024 State SC LB, West Florence – The University of South Carolina commitment had himself a night in the win over North Myrtle Beach. Hunter had 9.5 total tackles (nine solo), two tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, a pass break-up and a blocked field goal. A back-to-normal defensive output for the two-year standout wasn’t a big mystery. It was one of the few games where he wasn’t needed on offense and could focus on defense and help out on special teams.
Tre Leonard Tre Leonard 5'9" | 180 lbs | RB West Florence | 2025 State SC RB, West Florence – Leonard (pictured) was a huge reason Hunter was able to take offensive snaps off. In what was easily his best game in a West Florence uniform, the first-year Knights tailback put up 166 yards and a score on just 13 carries. That’s an average of 12.8 yards per carry. Those were typical games for Leonard a season ago before he left Trinity Collegiate. However, he’s had to earn his reps at West. A week ago, for instance, he only got one carry in the last-second lost to Myrtle Beach. The win over the Chiefs should be a positive sign for him moving forward.
Zori Pierce Zori Pierce 6'0" | 160 lbs | QB Lamar | 2026 State SC QB, Lamar – Between the career-high four touchdown passes and his career-high 268 passing yards, Pierce certainly put together his best game for Lamar. The sophomore spearheaded a 34-0 Region VI-A win over Green Sea Floyds on the road while keeping the Silver Foxes very much in control of their own destiny. Pierce completed 14-of-19 passes against the Trojans and didn’t throw an interception, something he still hasn’t done all season.
Lavon White Lavon White 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Andrews | 2024 State SC RB, Andrews – The Yellow Jackets’ fullback is most definitely back to full production levels after missing or being limited for a few weeks. White added 122 yards and four more touchdowns to his season ledger, spurring Andrews’ 53-26 Region VIII-2A victory over Mullins and all but securing a playoff spot. White, despite missing essentially three full games, has rushed for 487 yards and 13 touchdowns this fall.
