By now, most teams have a good idea of where they stand – whether they’re poised to make it to the playoffs, or building for next year. However, there are still some teams hoping to prove their worth in the last week and secure a spot in the playoffs. I will be previewing each game for week 9 by conference for the 5A level. First up is the Northwest Oregon Conference. For each game, I’ll provide a prediction and highlight some players to watch for each team based on their recent performances.
#6 Canby (6-2) @ #1 Wilsonville (7-1)
Prediction: Wilsonville def. Canby 42-21.
This game is set to be an exciting one with both teams currently ranking in the top ten. It’s expected to be a high-scoring match, given the impressive performances of both teams’ offenses this season. This game will be filled with players who have the talent to play on Sundays. I believe that Wilsonville, playing at home, will eventually come out on top against the Cougars.
Players to watch:
Hood River Valley (4-4) @ #11 Hillsboro (6-2)
Prediction: Hillsboro def. Hood River Valley 35-16.
The upcoming match between these two teams will be very interesting to watch as both teams are right in the mix for a playoff spot and they have not faced each other yet this year. It’s uncertain if Hood River Valley will get a higher seed than the Spartans if they win, or if the Spartans will be knocked out with only three losses. However, if Hood River Valley loses, they probably miss the playoffs, making this a must-win game for the Eagles. In my opinion, Hillsboro is the stronger team and should take care of business at home.

Centennial (1-7) @ Forest Grove (3-5)
Prediction: Forest Grove def. Centennial 42-26.
Centennial has been playing better, as they surprised Hood River Valley in the first half last week before mistakes derailed them once again. These two teams matched up in week 5 and Forest Grove came out on top 44-21. I think the outcome will be similar, but the score might be a little tighter. Forest Grove will probably miss the playoffs this season, despite having a respectable record.

Putnam (0-8) @ Southridge (1-7)
Prediction: Southridge def. Putnam 45-6.
Putnam had a great season last year, winning their first eight games, and ended with an 8-2 record. Unfortunately, this year has been a complete turnaround due to the transfer of several key players from the 2022 season. As a result, they have struggled to field a team and had to forfeit three games this season. It’s going to be another challenging week for them, and it looks like they will finish the season with a record of 0-9, which is incredibly tough. On the other hand, Southridge, who is also in the rebuilding phase, has more talented players than Putnam and should win this game handily. It’s difficult to see Putnam turning things around this week, but hopefully, they will find their way back to success in the future.
