Here’s a look at four college-level prospects who performed well and will make Liberal a tough team to beat out west in Class 5A.
Zayden Martinez Zayden Martinez 6'3" | 205 lbs | WR Liberal | 2024 State KS , WR, 6’3”, 205, Liberal, ‘24
Liberal’s main offensive weapon is all arms and legs. Martinez runs like a gazelle and has a great pair of hands. Martinez entered the game with seven receptions for 306 after two games. He caught five balls in the first half alone and scored another touchdown. Martinez is currently ranked No. 85 among his class of 2024. He is being recruited by multiple Division I and Division II programs. He is the most talented receiver I have seen play this season.
Aidan Schwindt, ATH, 5’8”, 165, Liberal, ‘24
I was really impressed with Schwindt. This young man moves like a water bug. Liberal had him lined out wide, in the slot, and he took snaps at quarterback. When he was lined up at QB he reminded me of a smaller Vince Young. He scored a rushing touchdown and gave the defense a whole new look when he was taking snaps at quarterback. He has solid speed and can be a factor on special teams. He also wrestles, so his legs are super strong and his weight fluctuates depending on the sports season. JUCO coaches across Kansas should be lining up to get this kid on campus.
J. Brooks Kappelmann, QB, 6’2”, 205, Liberal, ‘24
Kappelmann caught me a bit surprised. He captains an offense well and has a big arm. He can also run the ball well whether it’s a design run, an RPO, or just a quarterback scramble. He has a quick release and threw two touchdowns in the first half against Topeka High. NAIA schools looking for a future quarterback should give Kappelmann a look.
Hudson Rice Hudson Rice 6'2" | 275 lbs | OL Liberal | 2025 State KS , OL, 6’1”275, Liberal, ‘25
Rice is an excellent blocker who is already getting looks from Division II programs in Kansas. He has nice quickness and looked good getting upfield on pulling plays. He grades out better as a run blocker than in pass protection, but he helped open holes for Redskin ball carriers against bigger Trojan defensive linemen. He is just a tough ball player who you can tell enjoys the physicalness of the game.
