Let’s take a look…
Colquitt County
One of the top programs across Georgia, Colquitt County has their eyes set on a deep playoff run in 7A. They’re off to a fast start to the season with wins over Dutch Fork (SC), Stockbridge, and Tift County. Each game was a blowout with the powerful Packers winning each game by 20+ points. They are incredibly talented, led by Georgia Bulldog WR commit Ny Car and FSU tight end commit Landen Thomas Landen Thomas 6'4" | 210 lbs | TE Colquitt County | 2024 State GA . They’re playing well on both sides of the ball and might be the very best team in South Georgia this year.
Lee County
A tough, physical team every year, Lee County knows how to win, and they’re off to a fast start to the season. A top team across Georgia in the 6A class, the Trojans beat a really good Warner Robins team in week one, dominated Hapeville Charter in week two, and made quick work of Lithia Springs in week three. They’re running the ball effectively thanks to star running back Ousmane Kromah Ousmane Kromah 5'11" | 180 lbs | RB Lee County | 2025 State GA , who has 321 yards on the ground and six touchdowns on just 32 carries. They play physical and disciplined on defense, but they’ll have a tough task on their hands this upcoming weekend against Colquitt County. Still, look for the Trojans to push for a 6A state title this fall.
Thomas County Central
Another well-coached South Georgia team that always brings their “A” game, Thomas County Central is coming off an impressive 12-1 season in 2022 with hopes of going all the way this year. One of the best teams in 6A this year, the Yellow Jackets shut out Cairo 38-0 in week one, dominated big rival Thomasville 45-7 in week two, and then had no problem with Bainbridge, beating them easily in a 45-14 win. They’re crushing teams, and they’re doing in in all three phases of the game. Theey bring consistent effort every play and have made it look easy so far in 2023.
Brantley County
An undefeated 3-0 team in Southeast Georgia, Brantley County is a top team in 2A off to a great start to the season. The Herons beat down Atkinson County 46-20 in week one, beat Groves 30-0 in week two, and snuck by Beach 17-6 this past weekend. They’ve run the ball effectively with two running backs with over 100 yards early in the season. Defensively, they fly to the football and don’t miss many tackles. They play with an edge and don’t appear to be slowing down.
Ware County
The defending 5A state champions look like they could go back-to-back the way they’re starting the 2023 season. The Gators won a close game against Appling County in week one, beat down Richmond Hill 28-7 in week two, and then crushed Baldwin 48-20. They’re playing better and better each week, and that’s bad new for opposing defenders. They have two dependable rushers and plenty of quality defenders. They know what it takes to win a championship and are hoping to win another one in 5A this season.
