Let’s take a look…
Etowah
Thanks to a high-powered offense, the Eagles are off to a tremendous start to the 2023 season with an eye-opening 4-0 record so far. The Cherokee County program put up 63 points in a week one win over Lassiter, won a close game to rival Cherokee in week two, scored 49 in a week three win over Forsyth Central, and dominated once again in week four, beating Centennial 51-21. They’ve been running wild on the ground thanks to junior running back Xavier Mahoney Xavier Mahoney 5'9" | 160 lbs | ATH Etowah | 2025 GA and senior Reece Wehr. They’ve been strong defensively, giving up 27 points or less in every game. They may not have a star-studded roster, but they’re well coached and play solid, team football. They play hard, they play together, and they’re perfect so far this season with a big game this upcoming weekend against Sequoyah.
Greater Atlanta Christian
A program that consistently wins every year, the Spartans are once again off to a great season, as expected. Another well-coached team that finds ways to win ballgames, Greater Atlanta Christian can win big games, and can win the close ones as well. They blew out Meadowcreek in week one, then beat down Lovett in week two, snuck by Pace Academy in week three, then won convincingly against Decatur this past weekend. They’re clicking both on offense and defense right now, and they’re only going to get better as the season moves along. Senior quarterback Jack Stanton is playing great this year, and veteran defender Gold Chyrack Jr. is leading the way defensively.
Westlake
One of the top programs in the Atlanta area, the Lions are loaded with talent and are off to a big start to the season. They beat a tough North Cobb team convincingly in week one, dominated Crisp County in week two, pulled off a close win against a very good Cedar Grove team in week three, and bulldozed Southwest Dekald this past weekend. Offensively, they’re scoring points as will, putting up at least 46 points in every game while scoring at least 50 in three of four games. On defense, they are creating turnovers at will and have already picked off seven passes this year. They’re playing great and don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. They’re playing in a loaded 7A region with a non-region game against 4-0 Newton this upcoming weekend.
East Coweta
A program that continues to impress each year, East Coweta is off to a fast 4-0 start thanks to great play defensively and a stable, consistent offense. They came out with a tough week one win over Stars’ Mill to start the season, then dominated Newnan, beat up Hillgrove, and took care of a Sandy Creek team that won a state championship last year. They’ve been excellent on the ground, rushing for 10 touchdowns as a team through their first four games. They’ve had consistent play from quarterback Cohen Peeples Cohen Peeples 6'0" | 165 lbs | QB East Coweta | 2025 GA , and play tough, hard-hitting defense on a consistent basis. Like Westlake, East Coweta is playing in a very tough 7A region and will have to play their best if they want to stay undefeated through the regular season. They know how to win, and they could make a nice little playoff run in 7A if they continue to improve as the year moves along.
