We are two games in (three for some), and we have already started to see several players break out at different positions. This new series, “Hot Starts,” will highlight some of the players that have shot out of the gates in these opening weeks.
Next up in this Hot Starts series are the gunslingers. Here are four senior QBs that have gotten off to a quick and impressive start.
Anthony Rezac Anthony Rezac 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Omaha Westside | 2024 State NE | Omaha Westside | 6’4″ 195 lbs
Warrior’s QB Anthony Rezac Anthony Rezac 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Omaha Westside | 2024 State NE has picked up right where he left off last season. Anthony hasn’t had to do anything extremely over-the-top through two blowout victories, but he has continued to shine as the top dual-threat QB in the state. Rezac has passed for 353 yards and 4 touchdowns with 130 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Having started since his sophomore season, Anthony runs this offense extremely well and you can tell with how quick he’s making decisions and getting the ball out. Rezac throws an accurate ball (68% career completion 24 GP) with great placement and on several occasions he was able to lead his receiver open. He’s a very versatile runner that throws in a mix of shifty, twitchy runs but also doesn’t shy away from an opportunity to drop the pads and explode through a defender’s chest. Even with several D1 offers from Colgate, Dartmouth, Harvard, South Dakota, Yale, Army, Navy, and Air Force, I still think Anthony is bound to make a huge rise this season. Proven winner, proven production, solid off the field… major STEAL!!
Coryion Perry Coryion Perry 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Omaha Bryan | 2024 State NE | Omaha Bryan | 5’11” 180 lbs
Bryan Bear’s QB Coryion Perry Coryion Perry 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Omaha Bryan | 2024 State NE has wasted no time making some noise now that he’s back in the Cornhusker State. Coryion has lit up the field thus far with 434 passing yards, 6 passing touchdowns (1 Int), 69.7% completion, and a 139.2 QBR. The one thing that stood out about Coryion’s game so far is his athleticism, even though he hasn’t needed to run the ball, he still flashes excellent pocket mobility and ability to extend plays with his legs. He keeps his eyes downfield and does a great job looking off his first target if it’s not available. Perry has a strong arm and had several throws where he put some nice zip on the ball to fit it into tight windows. Perry also added a 62-yard receiving touchdown so you never really know when the Bears might dial up a nice trick play to let his playmaking ability shine. At 2-0, Coryion and the Bears are only getting started!!
Colby Duncan Colby Duncan 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Gross Catholic | 2024 State NE | Gross Catholic | 6’1″ 170 lbs
We’ll stay on the same field to talk about the other QB that will be lighting up Bryan Stadium on Thursday and Friday nights, Gross Catholic’s Colby Duncan Colby Duncan 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Gross Catholic | 2024 State NE . Colby was faced with dealing with the loss of a 1,000-yard rusher, a good chunk of the OL, and several other key pieces. Nonetheless, Colby has elevated his game and has the Cougar’s offense playing very well. So far, Colby has passed for 575 yards and four touchdowns, with an additional 117 yards and two scores on the ground. Colby’s poise and confidence really stood out when watching his two game tape. Duncan trusts his arm and his receivers very well and can deliver the ball with excellent timing and placement. He can make throws to all levels of the field especially an impressive deep throw that he can deliver with great touch on the ball. Colby does very well when facing pressure, showing his ability to evade the pass rush while still progressing through his reads and making accurate throws even when off-balanced. Very tough dude! Colby holds offers from Midland, Doane, Peru State, and Dordt but should continue to draw out more interest as the season progresses.
Nolan Maahs Nolan Maahs 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Waverly | 2024 State NE | Waverly | 6’4″ 190 lbs
Waverly’s Nolan Maahs Nolan Maahs 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Waverly | 2024 State NE has looked solid in his first two games for the Vikings. Grouped with a talented stable of RBs, Nolan has led a very well-balanced offense that can carve up defenses in the air and on the ground. Maahs is included in the ground attack, adding 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns to his 353 passing yards and three passing TDs. When attacking through the air, Nolan has done an excellent job of being efficient with his decision-making, completing an average of 65%. He’s not just doing so off of quick, short passes, Nolan is delivering the ball to all levels of the field, even showing that he can push the ball deep with accuracy. Nolan has a strong arm and showed that he can fit the ball into tight windows. He does a great job improvising with his legs and maintains his eyes upfield, looking for open targets. Nolan’s bigger frame and toughness also allow for designed QB runs to be added to the offense. This is a team that possesses a very high ceiling with Nolan under center and their stingy defense… look out!
