It can be difficult for members of the defensive secondary to make a name for themselves and stand out from the rest, especially for corners who see few passing targets.
The five defensive backs listed below have stood out through the first four weeks for all the right reasons, making them players whose recruiting deserves significant increases.
Cory Jackson Cory Jackson 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Eaglecrest | 2024 State CO | Eaglecrest | 2024 CB
Jackson is the all-around best pure cornerback in the state. His ability to lockdown wide receivers in press-man and zone coverages has caused him to see few targets this season, reinforcing his reputation as a game-changer. He is a physical player who does an excellent job rerouting receivers and keeping throwing lanes closed when switching threats. Jackson is a disruptive corner with top-tier physicality, putting his ceiling somewhere at the FBS level.
Damian McKiever Damian McKiever 5'10" | DB Cherry Creek | 2024 State CO | Cherry Creek | 2024 CB
McKiever is a legitimate sleeper with next-level talent. He is quick and explosive with disruptive physicality. Add his speed and toughness to the mix, and instantly becomes the ideal candidate for a defense in need of a nickel corner. McKiever has made significant strides as a defensive weapon, making him a must-scout prospect.
Mason LaBrie Mason LaBrie 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Golden | 2024 State CO | Golden | 2024 CB/FS
LaBrie is a defensive back with great height and a wide wingspan. The 6-foot-2 DB has a patient motor mirror technique that pairs perfectly with his lengthy jam, making him a lockdown corner in press man and underneath zone coverages. LaBrie is a talented defensive back with a high ceiling; expect him to add more offers to his list soon.
Kole Mathis | Fairview | 2024 CB/ATH
Mathis is a savvy cornerback with impressive explosiveness and outstanding instincts. He has fluid movements with excellent technique and playmaking skills. His ability to maintain his spacing and leverage during the receiver’s stem and then close the distance at the top of the route to make a play on the ball has enabled him to tally four interceptions over four games. He is a scrappy player who is unafraid to get physical and willing to come downhill to initiate contact with the ball carrier. Mathis has the athleticism that makes him a prime candidate for special teams return man, adding significant stock value to his potential as a prospect.
Mikey Munn | Windsor | 2024 FS
Munn is an underrated free safety with a solid set of fundamentals. He does a fantastic job of flying downhill and closing the distance to the ball carrier while maintaining his leverage. His ability to play with a low pad level and use textbook form-tackling techniques makes him an outstanding finisher, especially in open spaces. Munn is a reliable safety who will cover over the top and come downhill to rally for the tackle, giving him sleeper qualities as a next-level prospect.
