Under the leadership of Trent Miller the Willis Wildkats have surfaced as a real problem and threat to the star-packed District 13 6A title. Let’s delve off into some of the offensive playmakers who make the Wildkats a potential juggernaut for the approaching 2023 season.
Top Six guys for Offense:
Derek (DJ) Lagway Derek (DJ) Lagway 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Willis | 2024 State TX (QB)
Derek (DJ) Lagway Derek (DJ) Lagway 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Willis | 2024 State TX , fresh off an Elite 11 showing is a bonafide top 5 national talent and candidate for #1 overall quarterback for the 2024 class. Sitting comfortably in his 5-star ranking, Lagway has been working all offseason and summer with quarterback coach JP Tillman to put together the dream season he and his community has been longing for since the earlier days when his father (Derrick Lagway Sr.) and Michael Bishop carried the Willis Wildkats deep into the Texas state playoffs. Look for the 6’4 235-pound signal caller to put his dual threat capabilities on display in a powerful district (13-6A) full of stars. The city of Willis has much to cheer for with Lagway at the helm. Lagway is a pocket passer who can kill you when on the move. His completion chart decorates the entire field proving that he can dissect a defense and isn’t one dimensional. Opposing defensive coordinators will have their hands full with game planning for this guy.
Jalen Mickens Jalen Mickens 5'10" | 185 lbs | WR Willis | 2025 State TX (WR)
Jalen Mickens Jalen Mickens 5'10" | 185 lbs | WR Willis | 2025 State TX is coming into the 2023-24 season off of a great sophomore year under ther leadership of Coach Trent Miller. Mickens has visibly added muscle and will be utilizing that new found gerth and explosiveness in the slot, backfield, and potentially defensive side of the ball for the Wildkats. Mickens is an X-factor of a threat for Derek (DJ) Lagway Derek (DJ) Lagway 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Willis | 2024 State TX with his unique skillset. Coming off of a camp circuit that has recruiters buzzing the Mickens name and brand; Jalen Micken will be a cog in the offense and its chances of being a power in district 13 6A.
DeBraun Hampton DeBraun Hampton 5'11" | 170 lbs | WR Willis | 2024 State TX (WR)
The last time we spoke of Debraun Hampton we compared him to the mold of a Tank Dell at the high school level. Since that time, Hampton has been sharpening his skills with “The Footwork King” and other professional trainers to prove to the country that he is one of the top receivers in the nation. His goal for the upcoming season is not to prove the doubters wrong, but instead to prove himself right. Holding multiple offers to consider, Hampton has been taking his time to consider fit when it comes to his next level home. Until then, his main focus is the Willis Wildkats and the man to his left and right. Hiccup quick with larger hands; Hampton looks to build on an amazing junior showing by tracking down all-state honors and stats. There is a huge chip residing on the shoulder of #8. Lets see if anyone can dare to knock it off in District 13 6-A.
Daylion Robinson (RB)
Daylion Robinson is an electric ball carrier who holds several Group of 5 division 1 offers. He accumulated 1,100 yards rushing, 15 touchdowns, and was rarely seen being brought down by the first defender. Robinson is the ultimate team player who is just as coachable as he is talented. He is a consummate workhorse with outstanding vision and balance when running behind his pads. Robinson finished his sophomore season ranked as the 4th leading rusher in the district. Look for Robinson to solidify his name once again at the top of District 13-6A’s rushing leaders while trying to reach the goal of 20 TDs.
Mason Isbell Mason Isbell 6'2" | 255 lbs | OL Willis | 2025 TX (Guard / Center)
Mason Isbell Mason Isbell 6'2" | 255 lbs | OL Willis | 2025 TX will be the heartbeat of the Willis Wildkat offensive and defensive lines. Isbell has shown a remarkable IQ, attention to detail, motor, and intensity within doing his job. This kid clearly understands the assignment. He is a ball player plain and simple. Isbell is great at playing with and holding his leverage. His feet remain just as active as his hands when he shoots and presses, He has worked this offseason to build his endurance to match his technique and power so that he can limit breaks during competition. At the center position look for Mason Isbell Mason Isbell 6'2" | 255 lbs | OL Willis | 2025 TX to be the Derek (DJ) Lagway Derek (DJ) Lagway 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Willis | 2024 State TX of the offensive line and quarterback the protection for a revamped Wildkat crew up front.
Day’jon Moore Day’jon Moore 6'4" | 290 lbs | OL Willis | 2026 State TX (Left Tackle)
Day’jon Moore Day’jon Moore 6'4" | 290 lbs | OL Willis | 2026 State TX is a man child of an offensive tackle for the Wildkats. Only a sophomore and standing at 6’4 305-pounds, Moore will be a powerful presence on the offensive line. More has the ability to work as a swing tackle due to his versatility with both kick slide angles. He also possessed the short area quickness and power to operate from the interior at guard. Coach Miller will have a grand time developing this pup of a big dog while his quarterback will reap all of the benefits from the pocket. Moore plays with a level of nasty to his nature, is a disrespectful puncher, and was witnessed through spring ball sending a violent message to any opposition that lined up against him for reps.
