With the football season only a few days away from kickoff, I wanted to continue my film room coverage. This time I’m taking a look at some rising stars in the 2025 class. These juniors look primed to take off in year 3.
Darius Mason Darius Mason 5'11" | 230 lbs | RB Des Moines Valley | 2025 State IA | RB | Valley | 6’0″ 218 lbs
Battering ram of a back! Valley’s star junior RB, Darius Mason Darius Mason 5'11" | 230 lbs | RB Des Moines Valley | 2025 State IA , is back to bring more punishment to defenders. Darius is a powerful downhill runner that can drop the pad level to truck defenders. Mason has a powerful lower body that helps him stay upright even with multiple defenders attempting to bring him down. He does more than just run north-south, as he has enough twitch to shake defenders in open space. Darius’ vision gives him the ability to identify lanes quickly, and he has a great burst to explode through those lanes. Expect Darius to build on his 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns from last season with an even stronger junior campaign.
Cael Bruning Cael Bruning 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB Spencer | 2025 State IA | QB | Spencer | 6’3″ 175 lbs
Here’s a young gunslinger ready to step up big time! Junior QB Cael Bruning Cael Bruning 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB Spencer | 2025 State IA looks primed to have a breakout season as he presumably takes over the QB1 spot for the Spencer Tigers. I’ve had the opportunity to watch Cael at a few camps and can say he’s really impressed with his arm talent. He stands tall in the pocket at 6’3″ and looks like he could continue adding muscle to his frame in the next few seasons. As the starting QB for Spencer’s JV team, Cael had a very productive season in which he threw for 16 touchdowns and showed off his legs with three rushing touchdowns. He’s very poised in the pocket and won’t flinch under pressure if it means he can get the ball off at the perfect time. Bruning has solid arm strength and showed that he can launch the ball deep. He also displayed great touch and ball placement, pinning the ball only where his receiver could make a play on it. Get ready for some Bruning Bombs this season!
Nathan Beyenhoff Nathan Beyenhoff OL Lewis Central | 2025 IA | DL/OL | Lewis Central | 6’0″ 220 lbs
Another camp standout from this summer, Lewis Central’s Nathan Beyenhoff Nathan Beyenhoff OL Lewis Central | 2025 IA , had a great showing at the STB showcase. If his camp performance is any indication of the upcoming season… watch out! Nathan dominated on both the offensive and defensive line, displaying great technique with his hands and footwork. When I watch his tape, I see a physical player that loves to take the fight to his opponent. Nathan is a reliable center that does a great job working his hands inside, and once he wins that battle, Nathan has the strength to overpower his opponent and drive them into the dirt. Powerful leg drive that never stops pumping. I didn’t see a ton of defensive snaps on Nathan’s tape, but from what I saw at camp, I would expect him to pick up more time on that side of the ball. Need to get some more eyes on Nathan!
Joey Andres | WR | Spirit Lake | 6’0″ 175 lbs
Junior Joey Andres looks ready to make an impact in several ways this season. The Spirit Lake wideout showed that he can make plays outside of his receiving, taking handoffs for long gains and as an effective returner. He’s not a “big” receiver, but he does seem to play bigger than his size and can be physical. Watching some clips from camp, Joey shows good stop/start and solid burst when changing direction. With Spirit Lake losing a ton of production, Joey could step up in a BIG way as a junior.
