Winning 12 in a row before falling to Old Tappan in the state championship, Delsea is entering 2023 with a chip on their shoulder. Losing their efficient runner in Jared Schoppe will make this season a challenge, but this team has a very strong 2024 class that is ready to step it up and take it all the way this season.
Zach Maxwell
Zach Maxwell
Zach Maxwell is the returning starting QB for Delsea. An athlete with a lot of moxie, Zach is a big time running threat that is looking to make an even bigger impact on the ground this next season. Zach leads his offense from an option heavy scheme, which gives him a lot of opportunities to excel running the ball. He will continue to succeed with the misdirection, using it to fake it to his backs and tucking it for the run. He is also an agile runner once the ball is in his hands, using the jump cut to evade defenders between the tackles.
We will see Zach have an even bigger impact in the passing game this season as well. He has a lot of potential as a thrower. With a big arm and the option plays getting defenders to commit to the line, Zach will find plenty of opportunities to toss it over defenders to wide open receivers.
Delsea’s leading returning runner is out to put up some monster stats in 2023. Last season, Wayne Adair Wayne Adair 6’0″ | 195 lbs | RB Delsea | 2024 State NJ shined on both sides of the ball. On offense, Wayne lined up as a RB and FB where he used his quick acceleration to hit the hole hard. With the offensive scheme Delsea runs, Wayne was abe to follow his blockers and find his way to open field play after play.
Defensively, Wayne was a playmaker in the defensive backfield. He may be the most impactful from the safety position where he flew all over the field and gravitated to wherever the ball was found. A ball hawk that stays low in his back peddle, Wayne is able to get his hips around quickly to keep up with any receiver he went up against. Wayne will be delivering a high tackle season with a couple interceptions to go with it in 2023.
Dom Teti
Dom Teti
Dom Teti is in a position to fill some big shoes for Delsea. Dom made countless plays as a returner last season, which could easily translate to the offensive side of the ball. He displayed great vision and is able to see the play open up so he can make his move. Dom has already made a big impact as a defensive back. He is quick and can consistently jump the route of the nearest receiver. He is a reliable defender that can compete for the 50/50 ball, and can dislodge the ball from the receivers grip.
Xavier Wyatt
Xavier Wyatt
Xavier Wyatt is a player to watch out for to have a breakout season as a running back in 2023. He is very fast and will see an influx of carries go his way this season. In 2022, Xavier was utilized on offense as a motion man, where you saw him accelerate with the ball in his hands and get to the edge before the defenders could react. Defensively, Xavier has already made a name for himself. He played as a shut down corner last season where he was a consistent tackler on the perimeter. And with his quick play recognition, Xavier dug his foot into the ground and changed directions to make a play on shorter routes. Look for him to get some recognition this fall.
