The Green Hill Hawks came into Friday’s night contest in-store for a fight but that didn’t happen as the home team completely dominated this game from start to finish in their 37-0 victory over the visiting West Creek Coyotes.
It was never a question who would come out on top after the second play from scrimmage when sophomore quarterback Kannon Burroughs Kannon Burroughs 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Green Hill | 2026 TN threw it deep to wideout Brayden Jones Brayden Jones 5'11" | 185 lbs | WR Green Hill | 2024 TN and the senior pass catcher ran away from the defender to put the Hawks on top 7-0. It was that easy for Green Hill and when they immediately scored again on their next possession, you knew the rout was coming.
West Creek didn’t look invested, moving in a lethargic manner and showing a lack of football knowledge that allowed the Hawks to do whatever they wanted. The Coyotes were simply overmatched and never looked interested nor had the talent or firepower to keep up with the Hawks.
After going up 21-0 after Jones’ second touchdown of the 1st half, the rout was officially on and it was just a matter of time before the Coyotes took their second loss of the season.
Green Hill continued to pour on the points during the 2nd quarter with a 55 yard kick return for a touchdown from sophomore defensive back Dallas Jackson Dallas Jackson 5'9" | 160 lbs | DB Green Hill | 2026 TN , who is a player to watch over the next few years. The Hawks would go up 37-0 headed into the locker room and that’s where all the action would stop.
The Hawks dominated the field throughout the first half on both sides of the ball. The passing game behind Burroughs was strong as was their rushing attack, led by senior Niko Duffie Niko Duffie 6'0" | 190 lbs | ATH Green Hill | 2024 TN . Their line of scrimmage manhandled the Coyotes, never allowing any pressure to the backfield and constantly creating havoc on D.J. Swanson and the West Creek offense.
It was an excellent first half performance for Green Hill that certainly made the coaching staff happy. It was a near flawless experience from the starters, the veterans and a nice step in the right direction towards a big 2023 season.
Hitting the field after the halftime break, the Hawks coaching staff decided to sit their starters, so it was the backup’s time to gain experience and see what they could do against the West Creek starters. While they didn’t score, the Green Hill youth put in work, especially their defense that did not allow the Coyotes to score.
As the clock continued to run in the 2nd half, everybody was waiting for the game to end by this point as the outcome had been decided and the road team had already checked out. The Coyotes have a lot of work to do over the coming weeks to turn their season around as they have some key issues at several key positions throughout the team.
For the Hawks of Green Hill, they are still developing as well but sit in better standing when it comes to competing for a region title and a postseason berth. They have a solid offense led by Burroughs, Duffie, Jones and stud junior tight end Aaron Mattingly Aaron Mattingly 6'5" | 210 lbs | TE Green Hill | 2025 State TN while their defense can be stout, especially if the front seven plays up to standard.
Both of these teams are headed down different paths but for the home Hawks, they are now 2-0 and feeling good about themselves but must maintain focus as their schedule gets tougher but they are certainly a playoff caliber team with region title aspirations in their sight.
Player of the Game
Jones was the go-to target for Burroughs throughout the 1st half where this senior wideout produced on the 2nd play from scrimmage with a 70 plus yard touchdown reception then scored again in the 2nd quarter with a handoff turned into a rushing score. Jones was excellent on Friday evening, showing speed, big play abilities and upside for the next level. This is a Mid-Tennessee talent I must look further into as Jones has abilities and traits that can make it to the collegiate gridiron.
Other Top Performers ……
‘26 (QB) Kannon Burroughs Kannon Burroughs 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Green Hill | 2026 TN – Green Hill: Sporting nice size and good arm strength, Burroughs had a solid showing Friday evening, leading his team to multiple scores while showing confidence behind his right arm.
(DB) Jayden Hines Jayden Hines 6'1" | 175 lbs | DB West Creek | 2024 State TN – West Creek: The lone player from the Coyotes that looked like he belonged was Hines. This 6 ‘1 defender had the task of guarding Mattlingly on the night and held him to 1 reception for 5 yards. It was a nice performance from this underrated senior defensive back.
(RB/LB) Niko Duffie Niko Duffie 6'0" | 190 lbs | ATH Green Hill | 2024 TN – Green Hill: While Duffie had several carries on offense that produced good yards, it was his play at linebacker that put him on this list as the Hawks senior made several big hits, especially in the Coyotes backfield.
‘26 (DB) Dallas Jackson Dallas Jackson 5'9" | 160 lbs | DB Green Hill | 2026 TN – Green Hill: Not only did Jackson produce a 55 yard kick return for a TD, he also locked down the West Creek receivers all night, not allowing any free space or receptions on the evening.
(DT/OL) Alex Sunday Alex Sunday 6'5" | 280 lbs | OL Green Hill | 2024 TN – Green Hill: Sunday was a load up front and while he didn’t make a lot of tackles, he did a good job of stacking Coyote O-linemen and allowing his backers to make plays. It was an efficient, steady showing from this under the radar senior lineman.
