As we prepare for the complete list heading into the student-athletes’ fast-approaching freshman season, we’ll look a little more closely at six particular standouts from five different areas of the state — loosely determined by area codes.
The next half dozen promising young players in the process hail from the Bayou and River Parishes, the 985 area code and dipping some into the 225 in St. James Parish.
Peyton Clement Peyton Clement 5'11" | 150 lbs | QB St. James | 2027 State LA | 5-9, 140 ATH | St. James
The Wildcats probably could’ve had their own six-man list in this feature with a strong young freshman group making its way through Beautiful Downtown Vacherie. Give a nod to “Swaggy P,” a young athlete who has been on the radar from an early age working out alongside and spending time with a long list of older standout athletes. Clement has been a quick, sure-handed receiver and has worked more recently at quarterback.
Tony Crump Jr. Tony Crump Jr. 5'11" | 180 lbs | RB Destrehan | 2027 State LA | RB/ATH | Destrehan
We’ve talked a lot about how Destrehan’s special 2023 class that helped lead the program back to a state title hadn’t left the cupboard anywhere close to bare with its graduation. And that talent continues beyond the 2024, 2025 and 2026 standouts who have already been highlighted, with Crump among the first names to know for 2027 as a potentially versatile offensive weapon as a powerful ball-carrier with good size and a strong receiving skillset he showcased on the 7-on-7 circuit.
DeCaleb Green | 6-5, 175 DL/TE | Lutcher
The big trench prospect of this short list for the area, Green is a tall, long multisport standout moving well on both the football field and the basketball court, including good speed — whether downfield as a tight end or chasing down passers and ball-carriers as a defensive end or outside linebacker. He’s one of a couple potentially special Lutcher athletes on the list.
Kendrick Joseph Kendrick Joseph 5'9" | 150 lbs | WR Archbishop Rummel | 2025 State LA Jr. | 5-11, 150 ATH | St. James
and Derrick Pittman Jr. Derrick Pittman Jr. 5'8" | 145 lbs | ATH St. James | 2027 State LA | 5-8, 140 | St. James
A little lagniappe along the Mississippi. Another pair of versatile athletes in the aforementioned strong St. James freshman class, each Jr. stood out repeatedly this offseason from spring 7-on-7 circuits into the Wildcats’ summer 7-on-7 events and college camps. Joseph and Pittman are both quick, speedy in the open field, track and catch the ball consistently well and have shown the potential to be impact players on either side of the ball.
Trenajh Smith Trenajh Smith 6'1" | 170 lbs | ATH South Terrebonne | 2027 State LA | 6-0, 150 ATH | South Terrebonne
Dipping down into truer Bayou territory and breaking up the Destrehan, Lutcher and St. James party is the multisport Gators standout down in Bourg. Smith is a tall, long athlete with a listed 4.62-second 40-yard dash and high-level — even acrobatic — ball skills who has excelled on offense and defense, as well as on the basketball court and the track.
Ashton Stark Ashton Stark 5'9" | 150 lbs | WR Lutcher | 2027 State LA | 5-9, 150 ATH | Lutcher
One of the state’s few incoming freshmen already with a college offer, the son of former Lutcher and Louisiana Tech wide receiver Allen Stark reported a Grambling State offer last June. The younger Stark is one of the fastest athletes we’ve seen in the class thus far with the ability to stop on a dime and explode just as quickly. He has played multiple roles, including quarterback, in middle school, but begins high school as a wide receiver to already watch for the Bulldogs.
