Here is a look at five quarterbacks ranked between 100-160 in the Class of 2024 Prep Redzone rankings.
Two of them are coming off injury-shortened seasons and the other three have really big arms. This whole group represents traditional pocket-passing quarterbacks.
Ben Wheeler Ben Wheeler 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB St. James Academy | 2024 State KS , QB, 6’1”, 180, St. James Academy (No. 102)
Wheeler can sling the ball. He has a super quick release and throws with accuracy. He reminds me of Kurt Angle who won an Olympic gold medal with a “broken fricking neck.” Wheeler played three series in a game last season with a ‘broken fricking foot.” His stats from his junior year don’t do him justice as he only played six games and the St. James offense is a run-heavy one.
Ben Baker Ben Baker 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Blue Valley North | 2024 State KS , QB, 6’2”, 210, Blue Valley North (No. 103)
Baker is coming off an injury-shortened junior season. He will have lots to prove to himself and college recruiters. When he has the time to step into his throw, he can really launch it. I like his arm. I like his footwork. I like his release point. Now he just needs to prove that he is healthy in 2023.
Stocton Timbrook Stocton Timbrook 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Abilene | 2024 State KS , QB, 6’2”, 195, Abilene (No. 116)
Timbrook has an accurate arm and runs a pass-happy offense. He also is a solid runner out of the backfield. He has a long stride and can run away from would-be tacklers. Timbrook could also have a bright future on the baseball diamond. With an arm like his, it makes sense that he would be a pitch and play short and third. He might be next in line as a two-sport athlete with Brian Jordan, Deion Sanders, and Bo Jackson.
Dalton Jorgensen Dalton Jorgensen 5'10" | 185 lbs | QB Lansing | 2024 State KS , QB, 5’10”, 170, Lansing (No. 131)
Jorgenson threw for 2,000-plus yards and 25 touchdowns during this junior campaign. He arguably might throw the deep ball better than any of the quarterbacks on this list. He is a bit short for a pocket passer, but that is where he does his best work. To best utilize his skills, Lansing lines him up in the shotgun and with an empty backfield during a bulk of its offensive sets.
Drake McPherson Drake McPherson 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Campus | 2024 State KS , QB, 6’3”, 180, Campus (No. 154)
What I like most about McPherson is he is a classic pro-style quarterback who takes snaps under center. He has solid footwork and moves like a ballroom dancer. He has an accurate arm and can throw any and all routes. He has awesome size for a quarterback and can easily see him running a Division II offense.
