It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July and into August, we are publishing well over 100 in-depth team previews to get you completely ready for the 2023 football season. This is something that began in 2021 and has continued to get bigger every single year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champions, to top contenders and plenty of dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A, all the way down to the addition of 8-man coverage this year with Class B and C. In this post, we take a look at the Regent Prep Rams.
Regent Prep Rams
Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: #4
Preseason Coaches Ranking: UR
With the majority of their starters returning, Regent Prep is expecting to once again contend in Class B and recent history says that they will as they’ve been one of the top teams in the class over the last several seasons. Last season, the Rams were coming off a 9-3 campaign in 2021 and they would get back to winning ten-plus games and were one of the top teams in the class from start to finish. They opened it up with blowout wins in non-district play, including another win over Summit Christian, the team that ended their 2021 season in the second round of the playoffs. They would dominate throughout district play, until week ten when they had a showdown with Pioneer-Pleasant Vale. With the district title on the line, the Rams won a 55-48 shootout and would finish the regular season with a perfect record. They would get another win over Summit Christian in the first round and then had no problems against Quinton, scoring nearly 70 points to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, that’s where the year came to an end as they lost to Velma-Alma 40-26 and their season ended with an 11-1 mark.
But the Rams definitely look like a team that’s going to be in the mix well into November and even December as they have to only replace one starter from last year’s team. Seven starters are back on offense while another seven are back on defense. The Rams bring back their quarterback, who is quickly rising the ranks as one of the best in the Tulsa area. Replacing the lone graduate will be no easy task but the Rams have certainly proven over the last several years that they have the ability to reload and remain a contender in Class B. They come into this season as a top five team in our preseason rankings and right out of the gate, they are going to be tested. They face another top five team in the very first game of the season and it could be the first of two match-ups this year as both teams have state championship aspirations. We think the Rams certainly have what it takes to play into December and it’s clear that they’ve been knocking on the door of winning that state championship. This fall, they plan on kicking the door down and taking it from the rest of Class B.

Players To Watch
Regent Prep junior quarterback John Mark Roller John Mark Roller 6’1″ | QB Regent Prep | 2025 State OK is a prospect we’ll have our eyes on this season as he looks to lead the high-powered Regent offense to new heights this season. He put up strong numbers last year and has gotten on the radar because of that. He’s starting to establish himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the Tulsa area and it’s going to be interesting to see what kind of numbers he puts up this season. He’s going to have his entire offensive line back and the majority of his skill players. He’ll have to find a new leading receiver but that shouldn’t be a problem as the Rams have a few different options. The potential is definitely there for Roller to be the top passer in Class B this season and throughout the state, regardless of class.
While we really like the firepower the Rams bring back on the offensive side of the ball, the defense is also going to be strong with seven starters back from a unit that had four shutouts last season. The offense is going to be able to light up the scoreboard but they won’t have to outscore teams. Leading the way on the defensive unit is senior standout Mason Berg Mason Berg 6’0″ | LB Regent Prep | 2024 OK at a variety of positions. He’s one of the stronger players on the team and whether he’s lined up near the line of scrimmage or if he’s moved back to the linebacker position, Berg has the ability to make a ton of plays. We also anticipate him taking a leadership role within the defense and helping lead this unit as they try to improve on what they accomplished last season.

2023 Schedule/Games To Circle
Aug. 25 – AT Weleetka
– Regent Prep is kicking off the 2023 football season with a bang as they’ll go on the road to face off with Weleetka in a match-up of top four teams in our Class B preseason rankings. While the Rams come in at #4, the Outlaws are ahead of them at #2 and have some serious firepower returning this season. This is going to be a great “measuring stick” game for both teams. We’re going to have a great idea of just how competitive Class B is going to be as these two state championship contenders will square off in week zero. It will be the first meeting between these two.
Sept. 8 – AT Davenport
Sept. 22 – AT Wetumka
Sept. 28 – Summit Christian
Oct. 6 – AT Drumright
Oct. 12 – Barnsdall
Oct. 20 – AT Yale
Oct. 27 – Olive
Nov. 3 – AT Pioneer-Pleasant Vale
– We mentioned this at the beginning of the preview but Regent Prep’s only tough test during the regular season last year came in week ten against Pioneer-Pleasant Vale. The Rams would lock up the district championship but it was a 55-48 shootout. As we head into this season, it looks like this game could very well decide the district championship once again. But just like the Weleetka match-up in week zero, the Rams are going to have to go on the road to get this done. A solid win here could give the Rams plenty of momentum as they head into the playoffs the following week.
Notable
Regent Prep officially joined the OSSAA in 2016 and the Rams were successful right away and have continued that success over the past seven seasons. They’ve had a winning season every year since joining the association. And with that, they’ve never missed out on the postseason and once they’ve gotten there, they’ve been able to continue winning. Regent Prep has won at least one game every single year in the playoffs and have made it to at least the quarterfinals in each year except one. They also played for the state championship in 2018 and 2019 but had to settle for silver as 8-man powerhouse Shattuck went back to back. It will be interesting to see how much longer Regent Prep continues to play 8-man football. Up in Owasso, Rejoice Christian started out as an 8-man program not too long ago and they would quickly join the 11-man ranks and now they are having success in Class 2A. But the Rams aren’t thinking about any of that now. They are focused on finally capturing that elusive gold ball this season.
