The 2024 Rankings were updated yesterday and with an update comes new names added. Some of these players jump on our radar from new tapes being uploaded, attendees at our showcases, coach recommendations, etc.
Here are five players that made their rankings debut yesterday along with some player evaluations. Check them out!
Landon Wemhoff Landon Wemhoff 6'3" | 195 lbs | LB Elkhorn South | 2024 State NE | LB | Elkhorn South | 6’3″ 200 lbs
Overall: 114 | LB: 13
The Storm will roll into the 2023 season with one of the deepest rosters in the state. One of the players ready to step into a bigger role is Landon Wemhoff Landon Wemhoff 6'3" | 195 lbs | LB Elkhorn South | 2024 State NE , who should fill one of the outside linebacker spots. Wemhoff adds another well-coached 6-foot-plus, 200+ pounder with great instincts and a nose for the big play to Elkhorn South’s long list of great athletes. Landon fills various duties on defense from his outside linebacker role. He can provide pressure coming off the edge while also shutting down outside runs to his side. Wemhoff does a great job staying active at the line of scrimmage and uses his hands well to disengage from blocks. Landon also has the athleticism to also drop into coverage and blanket tight ends and receiving backs. He had several great ‘heads-up’ plays in his highlight tape where his motor and effort resulted in a pick, tackles for loss, chase-down tackles, etc. I think Landon’s stock will rise as he goes through the summer cycle and takes on a bigger role in the Elkhorn South defense. Huge upside!
Andrew Lucas Andrew Lucas 5'11" | 195 lbs | RB Bellevue East | 2024 State NE | RB/ATH | Bellevue East | 5’11” 195 lbs
Overall: 189 | RB: 21
RB AJ Lucas could be in for a break out season in 2023 for Bellevue East. Andrew had a solid season in an year of ups and downs for the Chieftains. He finished the season as their second leading rusher with 71 carries for 365 yards and five rushing touchdowns and should be able to build on that. Lucas is a tough back that can absorb contact while staying upright and fighting for more yards. He’s more of a north and south, one-cut-type back that can pick up hard yards between the tackles and has the vision and cutback ability to bounce the ball to the outside. AJ shows good burst coming out of his cuts and usually results in him picking up a good chunk of yardage. He has a strong stiff arm when fighting through tackles in the box and exhibits solid power and leg drive out of his lower body too. Expect him to step up big time next season!
Mason Weidner Mason Weidner 6'1" | LB Norfolk Catholic | 2024 State NE | LB | Norfolk | Catholic | 6’2″ 200 lbs
Overall: 229 | LB: 30
Mason is one of the players that I feel I placed too low on this update. The Norfolk Catholic thumper turned some heads at the Prospect Tour showcase in April and was among the showcases top ‘backers. When I watch his tape, I see a fluid linebacker that is a versatile defender, playing hard, downhill football against the run and smooth in coverage in underneath zones. He’s very smart with his keys and seems to recognize plays very well, even communicating pre-snap to his teammates. Mason has a big, strong frame at 6’2″ and 200 pounds, and moves very well at that size, posting a 4.56 40-yard time at the Prospect Tour. Add in that he comes in from a storied program like Norfolk Catholic and the great staff there and you’ll have a great LB prospect that should be college ready by the time his senior season is over. A great summer should confirm that he should move up some spots in our August update.
Drake Ferris Drake Ferris 5'10" | 210 lbs | OL North Platte | 2024 State NE | OL | North Platte | 5’10” 210 lbs
Overall: 250 | OL: 39
North Platte center Drake Ferris Drake Ferris 5'10" | 210 lbs | OL North Platte | 2024 State NE is a player I’m hoping to see more of this summer before we do updates in August. Drake put together a solid tape where he looked good in a run-dominant offense. Drake shows great short area burst and quickness at the snap. He displays solid footwork while working his way to pick up linebackers in the second level. Drake does a great job clearing inside runs lanes for his backs. Ferris maintains his leverage very well and showed consistency with his hands. I didn’t get to see a ton of pass blocking reps which would help give a more fair evaluation.
Mitchell Hupp Mitchell Hupp 6'3" | 190 lbs | TE Stanton | 2024 State NE | TE | Stanton | 6’3″ 190 lbs
Overall: 319 | TE: 16
Mitchell jumped on my radar when I was doing an article on football players that performed well at state track where he placed 2nd in the 200m dash and third in the 100m dash. Mitchell doesn’t have a ton of tape but he does flash lots of potential in the clips I saw. Hupp has the speed to stretch the field vertically and was a constant threat to rip a long reception up the seam, especially when matched up against LBs. His 24.9 yards per carry are proof to his big play ability, ending with 14 receptions for 349 yards and four receiving touchdowns. Depending on how he continues to fill his frame he could play a tight end/flex tight end that you can split outside. Mitchell also showed potential at outside linebacker where he used his length very well to create separation at the line and make plays in the backfield. Still flying under the radar!
