First, a player who gets that kind of number managed to stay healthy and play a ton of defensive snaps over the course of the season. Secondly, it probably means they play linebacker or safety as those are the defensive positions that haul in the majority of tackles.
This scouting report features eight Kansas defenders headed into their senior seasons. All eight of them recorded at least 100 tackles during their junior campaigns and are in the class of 2024.
Braden Young, LB, 6’1”, 180, Northeast (Arma)
Young finished with 132 total tackles during the 2022 season. Young is fast for his size and plays tight end on offense. He also recovered two fumbles for the Vikings. The bottom line with Young is he is a playmaker on both sides of the ball.
Cannon McCormack Cannon McCormack 6'0" | 215 lbs | LB Circle | 2024 State KS , LB, 6’0”, 215, Circle
McCormack finished his junior season with 137 total tackles. Twenty-eight tackles went for a loss of yardage. McCormack is quick, logging a 4.25-second shuttle. He is deadly on the blitz and thumps people when he hits them. He also finished with seven sacks.
Aaron Henson Aaron Henson 6'0" | 220 lbs | LB Piper | 2024 State KS , LB, 6’0”, 250, Piper
Henson had a total of 117 tackles for the Pirates in 2022. The Piper linebacker finished with eight tackles for loss and three sacks. Henson also forced three fumbles and recovered one. He has exceptional closing speed and finishes tackles.
Teegan Haines Teegan Haines 6'4" | 205 lbs | LB McPherson | 2024 State KS , LB, 6’4”, 190, McPherson
Haines had 125 total tackles during his junior season. Six of those tackles went for a loss of yardage and he had two sacks. Haines is solid in pass coverage as he finished with two interceptions in 2022. The Bullpup linebacker can definitely play at the college level.
Brody Hayes, SS, 5’10”, 175, Clay Center
Hayes finished his junior season with 105 tackles. The Clay Center safety did have one sack in 2022. The Tiger defender had one interception and one fumble recovery. He received All-state recognition as a defensive back. He is also a solid baseball player and could get college offers in two sports.
Spencer Dohm Spencer Dohm 5'11" | 210 lbs | LB St. James Academy | 2024 State KS , LB, 5’10”, 210, St. James Academy
Dohm finished with 101 tackles during his junior season, 8.5 of those tackles were for loss. He also had one interception during the 2022 campaign. Dohm is solid against the rush and the pass. He hits people hard and you can tell by watching him that he enjoys it.
Nate Campbell Nate Campbell 5'11" | 190 lbs | LB Heights (Wichita) | 2024 State KS , LB, 5’10”, 181, Heights (Wichita)
Campbell had 100 total tackles during his junior season. He finished with 15.5 tackles for loss. He can put quick pressure on the quarterback as he finished with eight hurries and 8.5 sacks in 2022. He is also a turnover machine. He caused four fumbles and had six fumble recoveries for the Falcons. Campbell also plays fullback for Wichita Heights and I love run-blocking fullbacks.
Isaac Shafer, LB, 6’0”, 180, Highland Park
Shafer finished with 100 tackles even during his junior season for the Scots. Six of those 100 tackles were for lost yardage and the Topeka linebacker added four quarterback sacks to his stat sheet. Shafer moves well laterally and is a smart defensive player. He is also versatile as he can play inside or outside linebacker.
