Class of 2024 coverage continues with us highlighting some juniors with major game.
Here are five players from Omaha, Lincoln and all the way to the Panhandle that have flashed on tape and we believe should be making more noise.
Trent Buda Trent Buda 6'2" | 185 lbs | DB Lincoln Southwest | 2024 State NE | DB | Lincoln Southwest | 6’2″ 185 lbs
With lots of depth on the Southwest defense last season, Trent played a more limited role, but he’s a player that should see more playing time in his senior season. Trent has good measurables for a safety at 6’2″ and 185 lbs and solid length to go with it. Even in this smaller role, Trent showed off his ball-hawking ability and ball skills with three interceptions. He reads the play very well and has great timing on when to go up for the ball. Trent has a nice change of direction and is quick to break on the ball. He uses his length very well to make hands catches away from his body. Buda also does a great job coming back for the ball when it’s in the air and has good concentration when making tough catches. I’m excited to see more of Trent this offseason and the upcoming season.
Yordi Dominguez Yordi Dominguez 5'10" | 190 lbs | LB Columbus Lakeview | 2024 State NE | LB | Columbus Lakeview | 5’10” 190 lbs
One player that is flying super under the radar is Columbus Lakeview’s, Yordi Dominguez Yordi Dominguez 5'10" | 190 lbs | LB Columbus Lakeview | 2024 State NE . Yordi is primarily an outside linebacker for the Vikings but is versatile and athletic enough that he can be used as a safety. Dominguez finished his junior season with 60 tackles, 2 PBUs, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery. He looked solid against both the pass and the run. Yordi plays the edge very well and can shut down runs to the outside. He’s a physical tackler with solid technique and lots of force behind his frame to leave a mark. Dominguez’s ability to get depth and move laterally in pass coverage was impressive to watch. He was able to keep up backs, TEs, and slot receivers. Yordi is smart and patient when playing his gaps and can disengage from blockers. Great motor and effort!
Jamari Allen Jamari Allen 6'0" | 195 lbs | ATH Omaha Burke | 2024 State NE | LB/RB | Omaha Burke | 6’0″ 195 lbs
Jamari caught my attention at the Warren Academy Showcase back in January, where he looked like a well-rounded back. He has a good mix of power and speed, with a strong frame to help him power through tackles and great speed when rounding the corner. What stood out at the WA showcase was Jamari’s receiving ability and his routes coming out of the backfield. He has solid footwork and enough twitch to leave defenders stunned. Allen was also a huge contributor on defense, where he played a versatile role that saw him play outside linebacker, edge rusher, and safety. His biggest asset is his ability to get into the backfield, finishing the season with 4.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. He can use his strength to fight off blockers or win off the line with his quick get-off. Allen has solid range in coverage and held his own very well against backs and TEs. Great overall athlete with huge upside!
Cael Peters Cael Peters 5'10" | 210 lbs | ATH Mitchell | 2024 State NE | QB/ATH | Mitchell | 5’10” 210 lbs
QB Cael Peters Cael Peters 5'10" | 210 lbs | ATH Mitchell | 2024 State NE helped lead the Tigers to a successful season while breaking out in his own right. Peters was tough to defend due to his ability to make plays with his arm and legs. He threw for 861 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, 793 rushing yards, and 13 touchdowns while also tacking on 85 tackles, a tackle for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and a pass defense. He shows a nice arm and arm strength that can deliver the ball with some zip to it. Cael’s tape had some really nice-looking deep balls that he put on the money. He has good twitch for a QB and does a solid job evading pressure in the backfield. Peters’ lower body strength makes him very tough to bring down on first contact and he can usually fall forward for a few extra yards. On the defensive side, Cael can line up in several spots from inside LB, outside LB, and even has safety potential. He is a great downhill defender that can plug gaps and blow up backs in their tracks. With a season as QB1 under his belt, I’m looking forward to seeing Cael’s development into his senior season.
Carter Stenger Carter Stenger 5'10" | 170 lbs | ATH York | 2024 State NE | DB/ATH | York | 5’10” 185 lbs
The Dukes have several great two-way standouts coming back in 2023, including do-it-all athlete Carter Stenger Carter Stenger 5'10" | 170 lbs | ATH York | 2024 State NE . Stenger is the starting safety on defense, where he does a great job as a run defender and in coverage. He does very well at diagnosing the play and can make quick breaks on the ball. Carter can get downhill quickly when he keys the run and is a very willing tackler with good efficiency in the open field. Stenger trusts his ball skills and will go up and make a play on the ball when he sees the opportunity. He plays his hands well and can usually come up with a PBU if he can’t come down with a pick. Offensively, he can line up anywhere from the slot, outside receiver, and even in the backfield. He works very well in the middle of the field and can find ways to get open. He was a very efficient and reliable receiver between the seams, where he could take advantage of size/speed matchups and use spacing to make plays. This should be a tough Duke’s squad, with Stenger expected to be a huge contributor.
