I saw a lot of great competition this weekend as the Nebraska Red Wolves hosted the inaugural Mother’s Day Showdown at the Capitol. Several teams from 4 different states traveled to Lincoln to battle for the bragging rights of winning the first tournament of its kind.
I will be highlighting some of the top standouts from the teams in attendance, starting with the host team, Nebraska Red Wolves. The Red Wolves had two teams participating at the tournament and saw several prospects make huge plays this weekend.
Check out five Red Wolves prospects that caught my attention.
Thomas Davis Thomas Davis 6'1" | 185 lbs | WR Lincoln North Star | 2024 State NE | 2024 | WR | Lincoln North Star | 6’0″ 185 lbs
– Thomas was one of the top playmakers across both Red Wolves teams, he had 5 touchdowns going into his third game on Saturday.
– Davis was a consistent deep-ball threat this weekend. He displays a great vertical burst and can get behind defenders immediately.
– He can win off of line with his release and uses his hands well to fight off press coverage.
– Thomas doesn’t mind getting physical at the catch point and will go up to fight for contested catches. Great concentration when following through with the catch process.
– Huge riser this offseason.
Levi Sherman Levi Sherman 6'1" | 215 lbs | TE Lincoln Northeast | 2025 State NE | 2025 | TE | Lincoln Northeast | 6’2″ 185 lbs
– Levi has really progressed as a player this offseason.
– He’s a tough, physical TE/flex TE that can make the difficult catches over the middle of the field.
– Sherman uses his size and frame to his advantage, able to go up over defenders or box defenders out before going up for the ball.
– Levi also showed some nice wiggle and burst after the catch, snagging quick crossing routes before turning upfield to tack on extra yards and throwing out a deadleg here and there.
– Very strong hands!
Jacian Brown Jacian Brown 5'11" | 155 lbs | ATH Lincoln East | 2025 State NE -Allen | 2025 | ATH | Lincoln Northeast | 5’9″ 170 lbs
– Jacian balled out at receiver where he was a super reliable target out of the slot.
– He’s got nice twitch to him and can find ways to create separation from defenders.
– Jacian had some really impressive catches in traffic, where he showed his ability to hang on to the ball through contact.
– He was also a standout on defense where he displayed great range as a safety. He can close space quickly and will step up to cover underneath routes.
Genesis Springs Genesis Springs 5'8" | 160 lbs | ATH Lincoln Northwest | 2024 State NE | 2024 | WR/ATH | Lincoln Northwest | 5’8″ 160 lbs
– Genesis is a very versatile player that held down a number of assignments for the Red Wolves.
– Very instinctive defender that can diagnose a play quickly.
– He’s very rangy with great field speed. Great ball skills when he gets to his target. Aggressive at the catch point.
– You have to account for him on every play because he does a good job sneaking into soft zones and making defenses pay.
DJ Athouris DJ Athouris 6'0" | 165 lbs | ATH Lincoln Southeast | 2024 State NE | 2024 | QB/ATH | Lincoln Southeast | 6’0″ 170 lbs
– Splitting time at QB while also playing receiver and defensive back, DJ performed at a high level this weekend.
– He progresses through his reads very well and has a quick release when he locks onto the open man.
– Athouris had some really impressive deep throws into tight windows and was consistent with his ball placement.
– Great athlete that also shined in coverage. Playing physical with his hands and getting his hands up to break up passes.
