School Change: Camden> Winslow Township
One of the more puzzling school changes in South Jersey. Jaylan Hornsby Jaylan Hornsby 6'3" | 185 lbs | WR Winslow | 2024 State NJ transfers from Camden to Winslow Township high school. Winslow gets an all-around receiver who has the total package in terms of size, speed, and athleticism. Winslow gets a deep threat who can win on every level of the defense and who also excels in contested catch situations. Hornsby is an elite prospect in this class and now will play for former Penn State Alum Bill Belton.
We’ve seen this situation before with former Winslow wide receiver Ejani Shakir Ejani Shakir 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Winslow | 2023 State NJ transfer from Pennsauken to Winslow. Ultimately, end up committing to Penn State. Coach Franklin checked up on Ejani frequently, even riding a helicopter to one of Ejani’s Friday night performances.
History may be repeating itself again with Hornsby. It’s widely known among recruiting circles that Hornsby is Penn State’s top 2024 target and this may be a way for Coach Franklin to keep an eye on one of his most coveted recruits.
School Change: DePaul Catholic> SJR
Patrick Grusser Patrick Grusser 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB St. Joes Regional | 2024 State NJ is a top 5 QB in his class and this is a huge get for SJR. Grusser is a 6’2 200 pound quarterback who has a solid arm and can take advantage of every level of the field. He’s a savvy field general who shows excellent command and poise.
After DePaul Catholic’s freshman quarterback, Derek Zammit Derek Zammit 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB DePaul Catholic | 2026 State NJ lead the team to a state championship. It would be a tough sight taking Zammit off the field and put Grusser back in full-time. Especially, after Grusser is coming off of an injury that only allowed him to play 6 games.
As a result, Grusser is now headed to St. Joes Regional with loads of young talent. Grusser takes over a team who has a legit shot to compete with Bergen Catholic for a chance at the state title.
School Change: Saint Peter’s Prep>Irvington
Saint Peter’s Prep hasn’t been having the best off-season losing a couple of top players on their defense. One of those players is Safety Cam Richardson Cam Richardson 6'2" | 185 lbs | DB Irvington | 2024 State NJ who didn’t have his best year last year. Cam is a 6’3 190 pounds safety who has the length and the range to cover a mass amount of space on the backend. He’s a solid tackler in run defense but plays best when he can roam and make plays on the football.
Cam will be on defense with another top Saftey Vaboue Toure Vaboue Toure 6'0" | 185 lbs | ATH Irvington | 2024 State NJ . Between those, they may have the best safety tandem in the state. And playing alongside. Vaboue should help Richardson have a bounce-back year.
Highlights
School Change: Saint Peter’s Prep>Irvington
Irvington was able to benefit richly from Saint Peter’s Prep’s loss of their top players. One of the more overlooked and underrated losses for Saint Peters is Senior Linebacker DJ Mangan DJ Mangan 6'3" | 215 lbs | LB Irvington | 2024 State NJ . DJ was Saint Peters’s best linebacker and showed off his instincts and range on a play-by-play basis. He has solid athleticism and is a sure one-on-one tackler.
He has the propensity to get out of position at times but that was from him overcompensating for Saint Peter’s awful defense last season. However, he now goes to a loaded Irvington defense, and hopefully, he can have a bounce-back year and bring a much-needed skillset to this team.
School Change: Pope John>West Orange
Chaas is one the most consistent defensive defensive backs in the state. 2 years ago he was good in man-to-man press coverage. This year he played well in off coverage and had lots of plays on the football in zone coverage this past season.
He has two years of solid tape against good competition. With his physical nature, he will be a welcome to West Orange, especially after the departures of Gensley Auguste Gensley Auguste 6'6" | 260 lbs | DL West Orange | 2023 State NJ , Saboor Karriem Saboor Karriem 6'4" | 180 lbs | DB West Orange | 2023 State NJ , and Jarvis Jones Jarvis Jones 6'3" | 170 lbs | ATH West Orange | 2023 State NJ to college. Having a consistent defensive back like McCoy who can do a little bit of everything and may even play safety could somewhat mitigate the loss of these pieces.
