We are getting closer and closer to the 2023 season every day, and with it, my excitement continues to skyrocket. In the lead-up to the 2023 season, I will be doing a position preview feature. This feature will jump around by class and district while highlighting different position groups in that district.
We kicked off the preseason Class A preview by looking at QBs by district. We’re kicking off Class B preseason coverage with RBs. I looked through rosters and watched back games to see which RBs will be stepping up in 2023.
Bennington
The Badgers have enjoyed a string of highly-productive RBs lately. Now with graduated senior Nick Colvert Nick Colvert 5'8" | 150 lbs | RB Bennington | 2023 State NE heading off to play college ball, a new back should step up for the Badgers. My early favorite to emerge as the starter is incoming senior Quinton Archer Quinton Archer 5'6" | 165 lbs | RB Bennington | 2024 State NE , who was the backup last season. He ended the season with 318 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 53 carries. Quinton isn’t a big back, but he does have good twitch and is very tough. He has good speed when rounding the corner and burst past the second level. You should also expect to see him used as a receiver, taking advantage of his open-space ability. With Bennington returning a good number of players on the OL, they should be back to opening big holes for Quinton.

Blair
The Bears will have plenty of options at RB, returning two of their top three rushers from last season. Incoming senior RB Ethan Baessler Ethan Baessler 5'9" | 175 lbs | ATH Blair | 2024 State NE is coming off a blazing performance at state track in which he took home gold in the 100m and 200m dash. He only carried the ball 25 times but averaged a strong 8.6 ypc and finished with 216 yards and a rushing touchdown. Obviously, his elite speed is his top asset, as he is able to outrace defenders to the edge before turning it up a gear. Incoming junior Brock Templar Brock Templar 140 lbs | ATH Blair | 2025 State NE was the Bear’s leading rusher last season, racking up 558 yards and five rushing touchdowns on 89 carries. Brock also has good speed, but what makes him so special is his vision and how natural of a runner he is. He seems to flow through traffic to find lanes with quick footwork and sharp cuts. Super tough as well, able to absorb contact and keep on churning. Baessler and Templar are both also very effective receiving backs out of the backfield and can line up in the slot, finishing with 17c/174y/2td and 17c/151y/1td receiving splits. Those two will get the majority share of the carries but don’t sleep on freshman stud Blaise Baughman to also sneak in some reps. Blaise was a dominant player on a dominant 8-0 freshman Bears team. One of the more dangerous backfields in Class B.

Brock Templar Brock Templar 140 lbs | ATH Blair | 2025 State NE | 2025 | RB/LB | 5’10” 170 lbs
Blaise Baughman | 2026 | RB/LB | 5’9″ 175 lbs
Elkhorn
If there’s one thing to expect from the Elkhorn Antlers, it’s to expect a strong, bruising run game to spearhead the offense. The Antlers have been one of the top rushing teams in Class B for the past few seasons, with loaded backfields and a strong OL leading the way. Elkhorn loses a great group of RBs to graduation but still has tons of depth players ready to step up. One of them is incoming junior Elliot Beister Elliot Beister RB Elkhorn | 2025 State NE , who played a rotational role last season but looked very good in the playing time he received. He is a bruiser that can pound the rock between the tackles with the balance and power to fight through contact. Beister does a great job following his blockers and can find open lanes easily with a nice burst once he sees daylight. One of those guys blocking for him will be fullback Mason Villwok Mason Villwok 6'1" | 195 lbs | LB Elkhorn | 2024 State NE . Villwok has a strong wrestling background which explains his physicality on the field as both fullback and linebacker. His blocking will be huge for the Antler’s running game, and he could also tote the rock from time to time on short-yardage situations.

Elkhorn North
The Wolves will be without their three top rushers from last season, including QB Josh Basilevac Josh Basilevac 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Elkhorn North | 2023 State NE and RB Christian Young Christian Young 5'10" | 165 lbs | ATH Elkhorn North | 2023 State NE . The next leading rusher is ATH Jett Tingelhoff Jett Tingelhoff 5'7" | 140 lbs | ATH Elkhorn North | 2025 State NE , who isn’t a foregone conclusion to be the next RB1. Jett is a dynamic player who can fill several positions, including running back. He’s an explosive slot receiver and played QB as a freshman, which is another position that will need to be filled. He finished his sophomore season with 228 rushing yards, 346 receiving yards, three rushing touchdowns, and three receiving touchdowns. The summer should see some of the talent in their depth break out.

Mount Michael Benedictine
The Knight’s starting RB from last season, Jake Harris, has graduated and left a big need at running back. 2026 RB Jedd Ramold was the backup for Harris last season and looks to be the favorite to win the RB1 job this season. I have very little film on Ramold, but to get called up to the varsity squad as a freshman and get meaningful minutes is huge. Look forward to seeing what other players emerge out of the Knight’s backfield.

Omaha Westview
The upstart Wolverines are back for year 2 of their program and are hungry to make an impact. The young team took some lumps last season in their first year as an active team but still had many good looks from several players. One of them was running back Mark Kiley Mark Kiley 5'10" | 160 lbs | RB Omaha Westview | 2025 NE , who led the Wolverine’s rushing attack. Kiley showed several flashes of potential not just as a runner but as a receiving back as well. He attacks his holes at full gas and has solid vision to maneuver through traffic. A tough runner that can pound the rock north-south. Very nice surprise!
