Continue ReadingA slot receiver differs from the skillset of an X or Z receiver in a number of ways. Slot receivers are the masters of the two way go release, play with great leverage and quickness to burst rations, and are commonly labeled Mr. 1st down” when the offense is behind the chains. His assignment is to line up in the slot position between the offensive tackle and the wide receiver and called upon for intermediate route damage, quick catches, and at times even handoffs from the jet sweep concept. Unlike outside receivers, slot receivers don’t have the sideline at one side. They can break either way. Instead of having 20-30 yards to beat a defender vertically, their responsibilities tend to be shorter routes cutting either left or right. Having stated as much, we ask the question of who are the top 2024 slots based off of a SKILLSET/PRODUCTION ratio displayed on actual game film?
JELANI WATKINS I SLOT RECEIVER I 5’9 I160 LBSI CLASS OF 2024 @ KLEIN FOREST I HOUSTON, TEXAS
Jelani Watkins of Klein Forest (2024) Houston, TX has posted mind-blowing sprinter times this year with explosive outing in the 60-meter sprint (6.67), 200 meters (20.94) and 100 meters (10.35). Now put the pads on and turn on the film and watch him give the illusion that he is playing on an entirely different surface than the opposition. The speed translates seamlessly. If there is a creese of daylight, Watkins is gone. He is not a track guy that plays football. He is a football player that just happens to be a savant on the track. Watkins knows how to get in and out of his breaks with ease as a knee bender when shifting his weight and is a homerun threat from every spot on the field. His film and attributes are why he is in the running for the number one slot receiver in the Greater Houston area.
DeBraun Hampton DeBraun Hampton 5'11" | 170 lbs | WR Willis | 2024 State TX I SLOT RECEIVER I 5’11” | 172 LBS I CLASS OF 2024 @ WILLIS | WILLIS, TX
DeBraun Hampton DeBraun Hampton 5'11" | 170 lbs | WR Willis | 2024 State TX of Willis High School reminds me a lot of the high school version of former NFL star Steve Smith. The film tells a story of an uber skilled dog of a catcher in space and close quarters. On tape he is a bulldog across the middle of the field with no regard for his body or the big hit. Hampton’s secret skill could be his ability to elude the big hit and yet bring down the catch in traffic. If there is no throwing window, Hampton will make one by moving in concert with his quarterback to find the cloudy to clear real estate. He has already mastered the deception of body language that causes unassuming defensive backs to either compromise their cushions prematurely or provoke them to open the hips in error for the faint step/double move. He was Class 13-6A’s 1st Team All-District, 1st Team All-Montgomery County, and All-Academic. Not enough for you yet? Hampton amassed 735 yards on 41 catches with a long of 91 yards. Furthermore, he posted 265 yards on special teams, tallied a total of 60 points on the year, 9 receiving touchdowns, 1 special teams touchdown, and 1,061 total yards for his junior campaign. Im not saying anything else. The tape says it all, and this is why he is in the running for the most electric slot receiver in The Greater Houston area and country for 2024.
TRACY JAMES II I SLOT RECEIVER I 6’0″ | 175 LBS I CLASS OF 2024 @ CYPRESS RANCH | CYPRESS, TX
Tracy James runs routes like he is an instructor. He just seems to know the counter move to whatever the defensive back tries to pull out of his bag. The tape catches James on the regular running to daylight and carrying his offense. He is a drive sustainer and a point producer. Agility, body control, strength, quickness, soft hands, physical stamina, concentration, focus, toughness, pride, eye-hand coordination, vision, intelligence, and the ability to conceptualize concepts all are embodied in James’s complete game. Add speed on top of these intangibles and you have what defensive coordinators would call a “Problem”. James has put on a significant amount of muscle mass in one year and it shows when he carries the rock with power and intentional grit. James is the 911 dispatcher for his offense and always seems to show up in the clutch with maturity beyond his years. You won’t find him talking much on the field of play because when all is said and done, he makes sure more is done than said…… He is an unapologetic threat for the slot receiver crown for the 2024 class.
Hunter Moddon Hunter Moddon 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Clear Lake | 2024 State TX I SLOT RECEIVER I 6’1″ | 170 LBS I CLASS OF 2024 @ CLEAR LAKE | HOUSTON, TX
Hunter Moddon Hunter Moddon 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Clear Lake | 2024 State TX is officially listed as a athlete but his junior year showed him all over the field making life difficult for the opposing sidelines. Whether from the cornerback position, punt return, the slot, or wideout position; Moddon’s elite agility popped off of the screen. This kid hasn’t found a way yet that he can’t or hasn’t scored at. As for the slot position, Moddon is a poison pill when operating out of the jet sweep or quick game. He will turn 5 yards into 60 yards in the blink of an eye. He seems to play at a different speed than others and the game rewards him by slowing down for him. A long strider with a 6’1 frame, Moddon covers ground in a hurry and knows how to use his body as an intimidator and big play option. Moddon is pound for pound one of the most consistent big play threats in the country and for that reason, he made the list for top slot in the Greater Houston area.
