We are back with another “Recruitment Rundown” feature, where we examine the recruiting scene in each positional group. Here we’ll report where the junior tight ends have been visiting, which offers they’ve received, and which schools have been showing interest. You’ll also see a few of the hidden gems that are still flying under the radar.
Carter Nelson Carter Nelson 6'5" | 215 lbs | TE Ainsworth | 2024 State NE | Ainsworth | 6’5″ 215 lbs
Offers: Oregon, Florida, Tennessee, Miami, Georgia, Purdue, Texas A&M, Illinois, Texas, Ole Miss, Alabama, Louisville, Michigan State, Colorado, Wyoming, Michigan, Auburn, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Penn State, Oklahoma, Duke, Baylor, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Iowa, Kansas State, and Nebraska.
Carter Nelson Carter Nelson 6'5" | 215 lbs | TE Ainsworth | 2024 State NE has been on a monumental rise since the offseason, earning offers from several major programs across the country and with good reason. Carter is one of the most versatile athletes we have seen in a while. He finished his junior season with 663 passing yards, 15 pass TDs, 761 rushing yards, 14 rush TDs, 525 receiving yards, 11 receiving TDs, 41 tackle, and 6 interceptions. He is an incredible athlete with 4.5 40-yard speed and he can jump out of the gym. Enormous catch radius with secure hands at the catch point. Tough after the catch with excellent lower body power and balance to plow through tackle attempts. He has been very busy with visits to Nebraska, Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Colorado, and several more likely coming up.
Joseph Stein Joseph Stein 6'6" | 225 lbs | TE Grand Island Northwest | 2024 State NE | Grand Island Northwest | 6’6″ 225 lbs
Offers: Colgate, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, Northern Colorado, Colorado State, Nebraska Kearney, Western Illinois, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State
Even with an extensive offers list, Joseph is a player that is still overlooked to a certain extent. He has excellent size at 6’6″ 225, with room to add more mass, and has great overall athleticism. Stein isn’t a super shifty guy, but he does show the ability to create separation from defenders and is reliable at the catch point. Joseph is also great after the catch, showing off a nice burst when turning upfield to pick up some YAC. He is a tough player that can absorb contact and stay upright. Joseph has had quite a few visits, including Iowa State, Wyoming, Northern Iowa, North Dakota, Colorado State, NDSU, Western Illinois, and South Dakota.
Eric Ingwerson Eric Ingwerson 6'7" | 245 lbs | TE Papillion-La Vista | 2024 State NE | Papillion-La Vista | 6’7″ 250 lbs
Commitment: Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is getting a monster with a massive upside! Eric Ingwerson Eric Ingwerson 6'7" | 245 lbs | TE Papillion-La Vista | 2024 State NE saw a huge stock boost early this year with an offer from Northern Iowa which opened the door for other schools to offer him. An offer, visit, and commitment to Pittsburgh all came within three days for Ingwerson. He cited relationships built with the coaching staff as the main driver for committing to the Panthers. An offer from Nebraska came in later, but it looks like Ingwerson is set with his commitment to Pitt. The Panthers are getting a big-time weapon with a monster reach and catch radius. He’s a physical player who can rumble with the ball and likes to deliver some mean blocks. Ingwerson is still only starting to scratch the surface of his true potential.
Michael Burt Michael Burt 6'6" | 230 lbs | TE Creighton Prep | 2024 State NE | Creighton Prep | 6’6″ 230 lbs
Offers: Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois.
Michael is a player that is primed to have a massive offseason. He jumped onto several radars with offers from Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan. Burt immediately stands out on tape with his big frame and physical playing style. What stands out to me from his receiving game is how aggressive he is at the catch point. Michael uses his big body and lengthy arms to go up and snag the ball out of the air, regardless of if there are defenders all over him. He’s also a great blocking tight end that can clear out the edge to open outside lanes. North Dakota State, Northern Illinois, and SDSU have all shown interest in Michael.
Tanner Hollinger Tanner Hollinger 6'6" | 235 lbs | TE Cross County | 2024 State NE | Cross County | 6’6″ 225 lbs
Offers: Colgate, Wayne State, Northwest Missouri State, Air Force, Army, Northern Illinois, Dartmouth, Yale, Northern Illinois, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Southeast Missouri State,
The 8-man tight ends have been making some NOISE this offseason. Tanner has emerged as one of the top tight ends in the state and has earned himself several offers. Tanner is the type of tough player you would expect to get from Cross County. He’s an excellent blocker that loves to finish off his opponent in the dirt. He’s a great route runner who can run a diverse route tree for being a run-heavy team. He can exploit underneath zones and get behind defenders for the deep pass. He is very tough after the catch- a strong lower body keeps his legs pumping through contact. He’s been busy recently with visits to SDSU, Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas State, Northern Illinois, and Wayne State. Buy stock now, as he’s only starting to heat up.
Trevor Spady Trevor Spady 6'4" | 215 lbs | TE Omaha Westside | 2024 State NE | Omaha Westside | 6’4″ 212 lbs
Interested Schools: SDSU, Kansas State, NDSU, Sioux Falls, Northern State, Augustana, Southwest Minnesota State, South Dakota, Northern Illinois, and Iowa State.
The first play in Trevor’s tape where he hauls in the game-winning touchdown in OT is all you really need to see from the Westside tight end. Spady is a special WR/TE hybrid who runs great routes, can play above the rim, and has automatic hands. He moves extremely well for being a tight end, showing a lot of fluidity in his routes and footwork. Spady also showed that he is an all-around tight end that can be an asset in the run game as a blocker… some mean blocks too. Trevor will have a chance to become a bigger part of the Westside offense as a receiver. Trevor is still waiting on his first offer, but I believe once the first one falls, we’ll see a lot more start flowing in. He’s visited Iowa State, Northern Illinois, Kansas State, and South Dakota State with Winona State, Southwest Minnesota State, South Dakota, NDSU, Northern State, and Augustana have also kept in contact with Trevor.
Ethan Duda | Elkhorn South | 6’5″ 220 lbs
Offers: Washburn
The Storm has been rolling lately, with several prospects picking up their first offer(s). Tight end Ethan Duda was one of those players, receiving an offer from Washburn. Ethan is a tough, physical tight end that doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty as a run blocker and is an excellent target as a receiver. He is a natural blocker that positions his hands very well and has a mean streak to him. He’s quick to find the open zone and exploit them to give his QB a quick target. Noticed that he is consistent with some of the little nuances of a receiver. Ethan could very well play outside LB at the next level, as he’s a great two-way player for Elkhorn South. Ethan has taken trips to Augustana, Washburn, and North Dakota State, with Northern State, Morningside, Briar Cliff, South Dakota Mines, Wayne State, Winona State, Crown College, and Western Illinois all showing interest.
Keenan Flannery Keenan Flannery 6'1" | 215 lbs | TE Papillion-La Vista South | 2024 State NE | Papillion-La Vista South | 6’1″ 215 lbs
Interested Schools: Minnesota St. – Moorhead, Southwest Minnesota State, Wayne State, and Winona State.
I only got to watch Keenan yesterday for a few reps, but he really showed out with his playmaking/catching ability in those reps. He is a solid “hands” receiver who can snag balls outside his frame. He moves very well and looks solid coming out of his breaks. I noticed Keenan’s burst after the catch, as he’s quick to turn upfield after securing the ball and is tough to bring down on first contact. Flannery is getting some attention on the recruiting circuit with visits to MSUM, SMSU, Wayne State, and Winona State. Still waiting on that first offer!
Caden Kapels Caden Kapels 6'5" | 210 lbs | TE Columbus | 2024 State NE | Columbus | 6’5″ 200 lbs
Caden could’ve been ranked as either a TE or OLB with his standout play on both sides of the ball. I like the athleticism that he displays as a tight end. He can use his body and length to create separation for himself. Kapels is quicker than a lot of LBs and stronger than most DBs, making him a tough matchup to account for. Solid blocker off the edge too. Definitely a player that needs to be added to more radars!
Seth Allen Seth Allen 6'4" | 200 lbs | TE Papillion-La Vista South | 2024 State NE | Papillion-La Vista South | 6’4″ 200 lbs
The Titans are going to a great 1-2 punch at tight end with Flannery and Seth Allen Seth Allen 6'4" | 200 lbs | TE Papillion-La Vista South | 2024 State NE . Seth is a taller, lengthier tight end that moves like a receiver. He has reliable hands and has great focus when making difficult catches. Seth adjusts very well to the ball in the air. He’s another player that fits the “flex TE” role with how he can line up anywhere from the traditional TE in-line spot to the slot and outside the seams. Nice acceleration after the catch, too; he can take short passes for long gains, even displaying some wiggle to his game. Sleeper!!
Caden Frey Caden Frey 6'5" | 220 lbs | TE Red Cloud / Frey Family Academy | 2024 State NE | Red Cloud | 6’5″ 210 lbs
Caden is a player that picked up a nice stock boost after a great showing at the NE/IA Prospect Tour. What stood out the most about Caden was how consistent he was with his hands, catching nearly everything coming his way. He does a great job adjusting to make catches and making receptions outside of his frame. Frey has inside-outside versatility, which allows him to exploit the biggest mismatches. He took home TE MVP honors from the Prospect Tour and definitely built up his stock.
Layne Warrior Layne Warrior 6'3" | 180 lbs | TE Bloomfield | 2024 State NE | Bloomfield | 6’3″ 165 lbs
A surprisingly under-the-radar prospect with talent and tons of production under his belt. Warrior is a smooth-running tight end that could fit more of a flex TE role with his receiver-like fluidness. He does a good job finding open zones and getting open. Layne is great at winning the jump ball over his opponent and can elevate to get the ball at the highest point. He does very well after the catch, with good acceleration to break away from defenders. An interesting prospect that can develop into a solid receiving option as a WR/Flex TE.
