In 2022, you saw players put themselves on the map and gain attention from a national level. American Gold is a very competitive division. However, we saw Caldwell absolutely dominate throughout the season, and are now bringing back key components of that 2022 roster. Here are some of the top returners from the American Gold division.
Greg Randall Greg Randall 6’1″ | 195 lbs | WR Madison | 2024 State NJ was a do it all player for Madison in 2022. The 6’1″ Athlete lined up mostly from the running back position, but could be found in the slot as well. A slippery ball carrier, Greg is extremely quick when the ball is in his hands. He’s not only a threat lining up behind the quarterback, but his skills extend to catching and being a return man on special teams. He has reliable hands, and can turn up field quickly to make a play after the catch. Greg’s future is bright, and it will be exciting to see how good he can be his senior year. Madison finished the season 6-3 and 3rd in the American Gold division, but don’t be surprised if they make a push for the division in 2023.
If you need a player to carry a team on his back, Matt Lahoe Matt Lahoe 5’9″ | 175 lbs | RB Morris Cathlic | 2024 State NJ is your guy. The Morris Catholic product produced at a extremely high level in 2022. Rushing for 1061 yards and 9 touchdowns, Matt made the most of his carries. He’s a shifty back. His foot work allows him to quickly change directions, maneuver around defenders, and then use his break away speed to out run the competition. The quarterback could just hand the ball off and let Matt go to work.
Matt Lahoe Matt Lahoe 5’9″ | 175 lbs | RB Morris Cathlic | 2024 State NJ is also a threat catching the ball out of the backfield. Bringing in 17 receptions for 184 yards and another touchdown, it wasn’t easy for defenses to go one on one with him. While Morris Catholic didn’t have the most successful year in 2022, Matt and Co. give this team hope for a brighter future.
Highlights
Louis Anemone
Louis Anemone
Playing for Caldwell, Louis Anemone was a force on both sides of the ball. Playing QB, WR, corner and safety, it was hard to keep track of him on the field. While on offense, Caldwell put him all over the field as they used his abilities to the fullest. Louis was able to execute at a very high level, gaining 287 yards on the ground and 145 in the air, and also running in 4 touchdowns. He truly can run, pass, and catch exceptionally well. It was really impressive to see what he was able to do on offense in 2022.
Defensively, he was just as great. He brought in 31 tackles and hauled in 3 interceptions. Few teams were successful throwing to Louis’ side of the field. With playing so many different roles for Caldwell in 2022, it is hard to determine what position Louis will end up playing at the next level. What I am sure of is Caldwell may be making another undefeated run with the help of Louis Anemone.
Julian Casale Julian Casale 6’0″ | 235 lbs | DL James Caldwell | 2024 NJ ‘s tape needs to be watched multiple times, he is a force to be reckoned with. The 6’0″ middle linebacker for Caldwell absolutely destroys offensive schemes. This guy can fly around the field with speeds you wouldn’t expect from a guy his size. He can blow up the play between the tackles, or can run the line and sweep the runners legs before they get to the next level. Most impressive, Julian delivers punishing hits, throwing runners around as if they were half his size.
With quick reflexes and a great understanding of the game, he can determine the offensive play as soon as the ball is snapped. He shoot the hole with deadly precision, and wrap up the ball carrier the moment the ball is in his hands. Most teams just have a hard time getting the ball back to the line of scrimmage when playing against Caldwell. With 115 total tackles and 9 sacks, Julian and his defense only let up 117 points all of last season (9 points per game.) Those are insane stats, and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if they did it again in 2023.

Hector Lopez Hector Lopez 5’8″ | LB Hanover Park | 2025 NJ III is one of those extremely intelligent football players on the field. It shows just by watching his highlights and seeing how he is able to read the opponents movement and anticipate the direction the play is going. The Hanover Park linebacker anchored the middle of the field in 2022, bringing in 87 tackles, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble.
Hector really has the speed of a running back. There are countless examples of him chasing them down from behind to prevent a big play from happening. He’s a consist and reliable force commanding the defense. With Hanover Park going 5-4 in 2022, look for Hector to lead the defense and continue the programs success.
Joey Marinello Joey Marinello 5'9" | 175 lbs | RB Caldwell | 2024 NJ
Joey Marinello Joey Marinello 5'9" | 175 lbs | RB Caldwell | 2024 NJ
Joey Marinello Joey Marinello 5’9″ | 175 lbs | RB Caldwell | 2024 NJ is the final Caldwell player returning for the 2023 season, and as you can see this team is punching with a lot of power. Another do it all player for the program, Joey dominated on the ground. He is that bigger back that Caldwell could rely on to squeeze out a few extra yards. He runs downhill with a full head of steam, and delivers the blow to anyone getting in his way.
In 2022 Joey ran for 1125 yards and ran the ball into the end zone 13 times. On defense, Joey accumulated 78 total tackles and brought in 3 interceptions. He’s a sure tackler, and one that will make the runner regret running his direction. A true game changer, Joey is going places in the future.
