Wichita was victorious in two games that the Prep Redzone scouts attended. The Wheat would go on to win the event in the 18U division.
Here is a rundown of four defensive players who played well in those two contests.
Montel Tate, 6’5”, 190, DB, Wellington, ‘23
Tate is a tall cover corner. He can defend the fade and he is a beast in press coverage. The Wellington product is committed to playing at Butler Community College after graduation. He shut down opponents in the 7v7 competition. He could be a real match-up problem for teams in the red zone on offense.
Dayontay Standifer Dayontay Standifer 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Wichita East | 2024 State KS , S, 6’1”, 205, Wichita East, ‘24
Standifer is an impressive athlete and my kind of football player, thick, strong, and fast. He played safety in the 7v7 competition. For Wichita East, he is also listed as a running back. To this scout, he looks like a linebacker or fullback at the collegiate level.
Robert Echols, S, 6’2”, 145, Wichita West, ‘24
Echols has the speed to play safety and the size to play linebacker. He reads routes well and understands his role on defense. He is a strong young man and makes the tough open-field tackle. He was impressive without pads and looks like he would be even tougher with them on.
Avante Scales, 5’11’, 165, DB, Wichita Heights, ‘24
One of the standouts for the Wheat on defense was Heights’ Scales. He is quick, can cover, and has solid closing speed. Scales had 42 total tackles during his junior season and added one sack and one interception. Watching his film, you can tell he is not afraid to hit people, and he is a solid tackler.
