Cover each team in the state and provide exposure for some of the best-hidden gems in the region. Here, we take a look at some 2024 film submissions and provide a scouting report.
Christopher Garrett Jr – QB – Bradwell Institute – 6’0 210
Small-school QB prospect that is a smooth operator and shows some moxie in his game. Navigates the pocket well and shows good enough field vision to go through his progressions and find open receivers all over the field. From head to toe, he is a smooth operator and shows little to no wasted movement. He has a clean and smooth release, allowing him to get the ball out with good timing and precision. His best throws are the ones that require a little more touch as he shows the ability to layer the ball over defenders down the field. He might not be an elite athlete, but his traits are plenty good enough for a prospect that plays with good control and timing. Should at least draw some consideration from smaller schools at the next level.
Ryan Graves Ryan Graves 6'3" | 235 lbs | TE Cherokee Bluff | 2024 State GA – TE – Cherokee Bluffs – 6’3 235
Missed entire junior season due to injury, but appears to have his movement back and is in good shape going into his senior season. A true blocking first TE with some serious power at the point of contact. Has the strength to blow defenders off course and can get downfield in a hurry as a lead blocker. Does show some promise downfield in the passing game, but likely projects as an H-Back style player, where he can meet defenders in the hole and use his sheer strength to drive them out of the way. He is a very scrappy and hardworking player that does a lot that won’t show up on the stat sheet. There are plenty of teams across all levels that are searching for a prospect like Graves, and one of them should take a chance on him.
Jake Maxwell – QB – Veterans – 6’3 185
Tall and lanky QB prospect that shows some toughness and good decision-making. Has the ability to hang in the pocket for an extra split second and take a hit if it means he can find an open receiver. Short and quick release from his ear allows him to get the ball out quickly. Once released, he puts some good spin on the ball and has good velocity. Does a good job of looking off DBs and throwing to a spot, some of his best throws are across the field where the ball placement is where only his receiver can make a play on it. Shows enough twitchiness in the pocket to evade pressure and has enough speed to scamper on 3rd down to pick up some yards. He has good tools now and is only going to continue to grow physically. Solid QB prospect that should garner FCS-level attention headed into his senior season.
William Gunnings III – RB – Warner Robins – 5’11 210
Super gutsy and electric RB that has already picked up some FBS offers. His 5’11 210 frame certainly packs a punch at contact and he does have the ability to fight through contact and keep his legs moving to pick up extra yards. Has good speed and elite explosiveness, hits the hole and finds openings with violent intentions and will do anything he can to reach the endzone. Along with his promise as a runner, he is not afraid to get his nose dirty as a blocker and can catch the ball out of the backfield too. Gunnings has the skillset and mentality as a runner that translates to the next level. He is already an FBS prospect, but I personally believe he could add some value to a P5 RB room over the next few years.
Trey Thomas Trey Thomas 6'3" | 240 lbs | DL Creekview | 2024 State GA – DL – Creekview – 6’3 240
Was able to get eyes on Thomas a few times last year and it felt like the PA announcer was calling his name every other play. Big and physical DE that plays with a ton of energy off the edge. Carves his way into the middle of the defense to make plays. For QBs and RBs, it can feel like the world is collapsing around them when Thomas is getting push inside. He shows promise as a pass rusher too. He has good bend and can dip his shoulder to get around tackles. He also has active hands and arms, fighting to maintain leverage and get free from blockers. There’s a lot to like about Thomas. Not only is he a big and physical force on the DL, but he also plays with a lot of energy and can make plays all over the field. It will be interesting to see what strides Thomas takes during his senior season.
Carson Westbrook Carson Westbrook 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Schley County | 2024 State GA – ATH – Schley County – 5’11 170
Versatile and dynamic player that lines up all over the field for Schley County. He is dangerous with the ball in his hands, both as a receiver and as a returner. There is no hesitation in his game. Once he gets the ball and finds an opening, he gets downfield in a hurry and scampers away from the defense. In my opinion, I think he projects best at safety. He has a good feel for the field and creeps up on receivers. He reads the QB well and breaks on the ball quickly with violence. When the ball is in the air, he does a good job of locating it and coming down with it, tallying numerous interceptions on the year. His natural feel for the game, ability to run sideline to sideline, and his ability to play the ball make him an intriguing prospect on the defensive side of the ball. When you add in the fact that he is a big-time playmaker with the ball in his hands, you have yourself a swiss army knife player.
