In addition to our 365-day-a-year football approach, Prep Red Zone South Carolina is the official media partner of the 2023 Palmetto Combine Series, meaning subscribers will get first-hand information on many of the 1,200 athletes in attendance at all four sites.
Several portion of combines aren’t exactly must-see entertainment.
But speed is speed.
At the Palmetto Combine East, to be conducted April 16 at West Florence, several blazers with a track record for high rates of speed will be in attendance. They’ll be pitted against each other, which means we also think they might just bring out the best in each other.
Cortez Lane Cortez Lane 5'11" | 170 lbs | RB Cardinal Newman | 2024 State SC WR, Cardinal Newman
The recent transfer from Camden has been clocked at a sub-4.5 40 multiple times in the last couple years, and it’s why he caught 33 passes for 469 yards and seven touchdowns in his first full year at receiver after transitioning from the backfield.
Jaquarius Mayrant Jaquarius Mayrant 6'1" | 185 lbs | WR Camden | 2024 State SC WRs, Camden
Mayrant showed off his speed during the Prep Red Zone North Carolinas showcase back in January, specifically moving well against man coverage and finding open space. Mayrant is quick, but the 6-foot, 180-pound receiver is fast, too.
Malachi Washington Malachi Washington 6'2" | 185 lbs | DL SC RB, Myrtle Beach
Just over the last month, Washington has shaved some time off his 100 meter times while running for the Seahawks’ track team. At 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds, Washington is low to the ground, but he’s a burner when he needs to be.
Terrence Smith Terrence Smith 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB South Aiken | 2024 State SC QB, South Aiken
A year ago, Smith set the fastest 40 time of every player in attendance at his combine, and he really hasn’t slowed down since. Smith led the state in quarterback rushing yards (2,083) in 2022, and there’s no indication he couldn’t do it again this fall as a senior.
Zai Offord Zai Offord 5'11" | 160 lbs | ATH Gray Collegiate | 2024 State SC WR/DB, Gray Collegiate
Ask any of the defensive backs who had to cover Offord (pictured) during the Blitz junior showcase game in January if he’s fast. His 75-yard catch and run touchdown ended only after he outran three players. Offord’s interest level has continued to climb the charts since.
Da’Marion Coe Da’Marion Coe 5'9" | 170 lbs | DB Hartsville | 2025 State SC DB, Hartville
We’ve written about Coe’s exploits in the open field and on the track before, and we’re going to do it again. For the better part of two seasons, Coe has been a dynamic player in all three phases of the game. It’s all because of his wheels.
Jordon Gidron Jordon Gidron 6'2" | 185 lbs | WR Ridge View | 2026 State SC WR, Ridge View
Ridge View has a strong history of pushing its football players to excel on the track (their mascot is a Blazer, so it makes sense). Gidron is already flirting with a sub-11-second 100-meter run this spring and will bring his speed to West Florence.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Members of the Prep Red Zone team will be on site for each of the four Palmetto Combine Series events in April, covering all the players and storylines. This year’s series will be held April 1 at Summerville, April 2 at York, April 15 at Westside and April 16 at West Florence. Prep Red Zone staff members were not responsible for the nomination or selection of participants in this year’s event.
