Times sure have changed, and for the better. Plenty of Power 5 schools regularly recruit Iowa.
The 2023 Class is finishing up its senior school year following 17 members signing scholarship offers with Power 5 programs, including Alabama and Penn State. Seven other guys in the cycle are walking on at Power 5s and six Hawkeye State natives signed FCS scholarships.
Not bad for a state with around 3 million people.
Interest is high again in ’24. On3 shows 13 in-state juniors with Power 5 offers. 247Sports adds two others with FBS offers.
It’s probably a good idea for us to check in periodically with all of the activity in Iowa. We’ll call it Red Zone Iowa Offer Tracker. Creative, we know.
Jake Peters, OL, Cedar Falls
Reported Offers: Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, Indiana State, South Dakota.
Outlook: Peters is an excellent athlete at 6-foot-3, 265 pounds. He averaged 5.7 points (64.2 FG%) and 3.6 rebounds in hoops this winter. College football staffs are ramping up interest in him. He reported all of his scholarships offers since Feb. 22. He’s visited NIU and SDSU this spring and has been invited to campus by Iowa, UNI, Indiana State, Wyoming and NDSU. Already with offers from an FBS program and the FCS national champs, Peters positioning could improve more if he stands out at summer college camps.
Connor Moberly Connor Moberly 6'4" | 200 lbs | QB Southeast Polk | 2024 State IA , QB, Southeast Polk
Reported Offers: Iowa State, Northern Iowa.
Outlook: Moberly (6-4, 195) led the Rams to their second consecutive Class 5A state title last season and reported his Cyclone scholarship offer shortly thereafter. Northern Iowa offered him last summer, and he’s received plenty of interest beyond his two offers. He’s visited ISU three times and Iowa once. Pittsburgh recently invited him to Spring practice. Quarterbacks are under more pressure than other positions to secure their college roster spot, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Moberly grab one sooner rather than later.
Graham Eben Graham Eben 6'1" | 195 lbs | RB Central Lyon Rock Rapids | 2024 State IA , S, Central Lyon
Reported Offers: North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State.
Outlook: The FCS powers are all in on Eben (6-1, 190) and Power 5s are showing interest. He’s visited Iowa, Iowa State and Kansas State, and those programs have invited him back to campus this spring. Eben is the perfect candidate to raise his stock during the summer camp circuit. He’s already put plenty of productive plays on tape.
Tono Cornell Tono Cornell 6'3" | 280 lbs | OL Independence | 2024 State IA , DL/OL, Iowa City High
Reported Offers: Northern Iowa, North Dakota.
Outlook: Cornell (6-2, 294) sits on the radar for plenty of schools. He’s another prospect who can benefit from attending junior days and then camping for college coaches in the summer. The size and athleticism are there. He visited Northern Iowa’s junior day in February, and has been invited to junior days and camps at South Dakota State, North Dakota State and South Dakota. He’s visiting Wyoming’s junior day on April 4.
DJ Vonnahme, S/LB/TE, Kuemper Catholic
Reported Offers: Colorado State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota.
Outlook: Vonnahme (6-4, 205) turned heads last Fall, showing athleticism with a projectable frame. Defense could be his future home but others might see him catching passes at tight end. He attended a junior day at Iowa State this month and was invited to Spring practice at Iowa. North Dakota State and South Dakota State were among the other schools inviting him to visit campus.
Garret Rutledge, OL, Lewis Central
Reported Offers: Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, South Dakota State.
Outlook: Rutledge (6-6, 280) looks the part of a college football player and his film confirms it. He’s already in good shape with offers from three of the better FCS programs nationally. He visited Iowa State’s junior day this month and stopped at Kansas during January. He seems like a prospect capable of taking off during summer camp season.
Reece Vander Zee Reece Vander Zee 6'5" | 190 lbs | WR Central Lyon Rock Rapids | 2024 State IA , WR/TE, Central Lyon
Reported Offers: Air Force, Western Michigan, Dartmouth, Yale, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, Montana State, Northern Iowa, Eastern Michigan.
Outlook: Vander Zee has helped the Lions win state titles in football and basketball this school year. He’s also seen his football recruitment take off with all of his scholarship offers being reported since Jan. 12. In addition to those opportunities, he’s been invited for campus visits by Minnesota, Kansas State, Iowa, Iowa State and North Dakota State, among others.
Editor’s Note – We will be adding more prospects to this rundown during future installments of this series.
