Southwestern is coming off a 9-2 season in the KCAC and is restocking the cabinet with offensive and defensive weapons.
Two solid candidates to lead the offensive huddle in future years are in this class, and a group of six outstanding defenders highlights this class.
Here is a scouting report on the 12 Kansas High School seniors signed by the Moundbuilders.
Eric Erbe Eric Erbe 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Chanute | 2023 State KS , 6’2”, 195, QB, Chanute
Erbe is a dual-threat quarterback with a big arm. He threw for 1,425 yards and 23 touchdowns during his senior season. The Blue Comet QB also rushed for 181 yards and six touchdowns. With his size, he projects to be a solid pocket quarterback, but he also throws well on the run.
Brady Strausz Brady Strausz 6'2" | 185 lbs | ATH Andover | 2023 State KS , 6’2”, 185, QB, Andover
Southwestern has not just one, but two physically gifted quarterbacks in this recruiting class. Strausz has a big arm and a nice touch. He sells the play-fake really well and is more of a threat to run the ball than his Erbe. The two of them could and should have real competition down the line, that is unless one of them changes position. The Moundbuilder offensive playbook could have multiple RPO and trick plays in it for years to come.
Caden Clark, 5”11”, 175, WR, Arkansas City
Clark was the primary offensive weapon for a 3-7 Arkansas City squad. He finished his senior year with 63 receptions for 733 yards. He is a solid route runner and a good blocker on the edge. He also caught five touchdowns during the 2022 season.
Thelonius Jones, 5’5”, 150, ATH, Junction City
As Mickie said in Rocky II Jones has “greasy fast speed.” If he gets past you forget about catching him. He has good hands and can return kicks. It will be interesting to see what position he calls home in college.
John Martinez John Martinez 5'8" | 150 lbs | DB Pratt | 2023 State KS , 5’8”, 150, ATH, Pratt
The 2022 Greenbacks had multiple ball carriers. Martinez finished the season second with 634 yards rushing and third on the team with five rushing touchdowns. Martinez added four touchdown receptions to his total and can line up out wide, or catch balls out of the backfield.
Conner McVicker Conner McVicker 6'0" | 275 lbs | OL McPherson | 2023 State KS , 6’0”, 279, OL, McPherson
McVicker played tackle for McPherson. Right now, he is a better run blocker than a pass protector. However, he has the speed to get out and block on screen passes He will add solid depth to the Moundbuilder O-Line.
Isaiah Yehudah Isaiah Yehudah 5'11" | 205 lbs | LB Wichita Heights | 2023 State KS , 5’11”, 175, LB, Wichita Heights
Yehuda is a beast on the blitz. He finished his junior season with 51 tackles which were second on his team. He is quick and knows how to tackle. It also does not hurt him that he competed in practice every day against one of the state’s best running backs, John Randle. Southwestern landed a solid prospect with this signing.
Tyler Sanchez,5’9”, 190, LB, Circle
Sanchez can play all over the field. At Circle High School he was a slot back, defensive back, and linebacker. It appears that Southwestern will use him first as a pass coverage linebacker. He is quick off the ball and tough as nails.
Gavin Richardson, 6’0”, 184, LB, McPherson
Richardson is a shifty linebacker who enjoys hitting people. During his senior season, Richardson finished with 71 total tackles, two of which were tackles for loss. He also had one sack and two interceptions.
Corbyn Clement Corbyn Clement 6'1" | 275 lbs | DL Wichita East | 2023 KS , 6’0”, 250, DL, Wichita East
A defense with Clement on the D-Line with Yehudah rolled up behind him, is enough to make any offensive coordinator cringe. The Wichita East product is big, fast, and has quick hands. He can bull rush an appointing lineman or run by him.
Aidan Fountain,6’3”, 245, DL, Hutchinson
Fountain is even bigger than Clement. He is more of a pass rusher than Clement, but the two of them next to each other or on opposite sides is a scary notion. The Salthawk product has quick feet and a strong upper body.
Konnor Kielhorn, 6’0”, 175, DB, Douglass
Kielhorn of course played both ways at Douglass, but it appears the Moundbuilders plan to use him on defense first. He had two interceptions and 17 total tackles during his senior season for the Douglass Bulldogs. He caught 40 balls for 523 yards on offense. Kielhorn should provide instant help on special teams at Southwestern.
