Groom is a star in the nickel position playing over slot receivers for Rigby. It take some extreme talent to play in the slot as you are matched up against some of the best route runners with good quickness every game. Groom has active feet that allow him to mirror and shade slot receivers in their routes. Shows good route recognition in coverage and is able to play man or zone. Has a high football IQ that shows on film as he never seems to misaligned or out of place. He has really good hip flexibility that allows him to run with receivers on a variety of routes. He is physical at the point of attack with the ability to get up and jam receivers. Is really strong in run support as he is not afraid to get in the mix and makes a ton of tackles at or near the line of scrimmage. Shows the ability to really time up blitzes and finishes violently at the quarterback. He is a true utility man for the Trojans as the nickel position is becoming more and more popular due to the spread offenses teams are seeing. Groom is going to have a huge senior season and projects as a FCS, DII, DII prospect right now.
Highlights
McBride is a true cover corner in all sense of the word cover. He has elite ability to play zone or man coverage with his flexibility in his hip and his top end speed. McBride has a smooth back pedal that easily allows him to maintain his leverage in coverage. Shows an elite feel for route recognition as he is constantly breaking up passes at the top of receiver routes. He routinely stay in phase down the field running stride for stride with receivers and plays their hands as the ball comes in. He has the ability to really control his body movements as he never seems to be out of control in his back pedal. Has the ability to really break on the football with quick transitions and elite timing. Rarely gets called for pass interference or defensive holding as he uses his position to his advantage. Has elite speed that allows him to run with anyone and also chase wide receivers across the field while consistently hawking players who break away from other defenders in the field. Active in the run game with solid open field tackling and is not afraid to come up and make plays at the line of scrimmage when necessary. Projects as an FBS, FCS, DII prospects and should have a big year for the Mavericks.
Patterson is possibly the best tackling safety in the state as he has a quick trigger that allows him to fill the alley and make play at the line of scrimmage. He posses an elite feel for what offenses are trying to do with his ability to trigger downhill and deliver devastating hits. Not only is he an elite tackler when it comes to finishing violently he might be the best open field tackler we have seen on film as his feet never seem to die and use outstanding leverage to get defenders down. He is an absolute monster in the middle of the field or off the hash when it comes to hit against wide receivers trying to test Twin Falls over the middle. An absolute ball hawk in the back end as he can really get off the hash and has a elite feel over reading quarterbacks. Shows the ability to cover almost sideline to sideline with his speed and transitions from his back pedal. Has natural pass catching ability that allows him to sky over offensive players and record interceptions. An absolute playmaker in the backend for Twin Falls. Due to his size he projects as a DII, DIII or NAIA prospects but plays with FCS talent for sure. Should have a monster season for Twin Falls this year.
Highlights
Newman is a unique football player as his size equates more to playing cornerback but his ability as a safety are right up there with the best in the entire state. His willingness as a tackler is something that shows up right away on film as he is constantly putting himself in the mix from his safety spot as a fill or alley defender. Runs his feet on contact and has a elite understanding of where to strike offensive players to get them down effectively. Shows high football IQ that allows him to be in the right place at the right time along with his ability to recognize routes. Really covers the backend of the defense as his speed allows him to get off the hash and cover all the way to the sideline. At corner his quick transitions from a shuffle or back pedal allow him to make plays on the football or limit receivers ability to pick up yards after the catch. Shows proficiency in his ability to play man or zone coverage at the corner position even though its not his natural position after playing a lot of safety as a sophomore. Newman is going to be an attractive prospect because he’s so multidimensional. Due to his size he projects as a DII, DIII, NAIA prospect but is another player with FCS talent. All Newman needs is a chance and there is no doubt he will make the most of it.
