We looked at Class A position groups to watch; now, let’s venture into Class B, where I have three positional units that look strong as we head into 2023.
Skutt Running Backs
Last season saw the Skutt offense experience some high-and-lows as they found their footing. Next season should be different as they’ll feature one of the top RB duos in Class B. Juniors Anthony Heithoff Anthony Heithoff 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB Skutt Catholic | 2024 State NE and Colin Pike Colin Pike 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Skutt Catholic | 2024 State NE will be back to ground-and-pound opposing defenses. Anthony is a shifty back with a lot of patience behind the line of scrimmage. He has great vision and lets his blocks get et up. Anthony is also a threat as a receiving back and a returner. Colin is an explosive back that does a great job finding his gap and firing through it like a rocket. He has solid acceleration and can turn it up a notch when he gets past the third level. Both backs are very well-rounded, with great balance, strong, excellent vision, and versatility. This duo could help lead the Sky Hawks to a deep November run.
Colin Pike Colin Pike 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Skutt Catholic | 2024 State NE | 2024 | 5’11” 185 lbs
Anthony Heithoff Anthony Heithoff 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB Skutt Catholic | 2024 State NE | 2024 | 5’10” 195 lbs
Elkhorn North Defensive Line
As I kept up with Elkhorn North throughout the season and noticed they kept surpassing expectations week after week, I wondered what was driving their quick rise. I picked up on one of the big reasons when I watched them in person and saw how good they were in the trenches. Although the defensive line will lose Cole Sharar Cole Sharar 6'4" | 300 lbs | DL Elkhorn North | 2023 State NE , they will retain key pieces like Sam Thomas Sam Thomas 6'5" | 270 lbs | OL Elkhorn North | 2024 State NE , Brock Marler Brock Marler 6'1" | 255 lbs | OL Elkhorn North | 2024 State NE , and Ben Madrigal Ben Madrigal DL Elkhorn North | 2025 NE . Sam is a player that is starting to make noise in the recruiting world with an offer from Northern Iowa. He is vicious on both offensive and defensive lines, using his length and power to dominate opponents. He does a great job winning the edge immediately and shutting down runs going in his direction. Brock is a player that I think should be getting more recognition. He is quick with his first step and can use his hands to break off from blocks. Ben Madrigal Ben Madrigal DL Elkhorn North | 2025 NE and Jayden Kohnekamp are two 2025s that are sleepers to step up in a big way next season.
Sam Thomas Sam Thomas 6'5" | 270 lbs | OL Elkhorn North | 2024 State NE | 2024 | 6’5″ 265 lbs
Brock Marler Brock Marler 6'1" | 255 lbs | OL Elkhorn North | 2024 State NE | 2024 | 6’1″ 245 lbs
Ben Madrigal Ben Madrigal DL Elkhorn North | 2025 NE | 2025 | 5’11” 295 lbs
Jayden Kohnekamp | 2025 | 6’4″ 300 lbs
Blair Wide Receivers
My prediction is for the Blair Bears to yield one of the top passing attacks next season. They will have one of the top 2024 QBs in Bode Soukup Bode Soukup 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Blair | 2024 State NE , back under center, and he’ll have a lot of talent to throw to. J’shawn Unger J’shawn Unger 6'4" | 205 lbs | ATH Blair | 2024 State NE is a tall, athletic pass catcher that fits the TE/WR hybrid role. He can use his big frame to make tough catches and has the speed to take the top off of a defense. Unfortunately for coaches hoping to scoop up the Blair pass-catcher, he is committed to Nebraska for baseball. Brady Brown Brady Brown 5'11" | 185 lbs | WR Blair | 2024 State NE has been making plays since his sophomore year. Brady is more of a technician that can carve defenses up with his route running and footwork. He has a great football IQ and knows how to exploit soft spots in defenses. Nelson Kosch Nelson Kosch 6'0" | 145 lbs | WR Blair | 2025 NE is a 2025 player that could step up as a WR3.
J’shawn Unger J’shawn Unger 6'4" | 205 lbs | ATH Blair | 2024 State NE | 2024 | 6’4″ 205 lbs
Brady Brown Brady Brown 5'11" | 185 lbs | WR Blair | 2024 State NE | 2024 | 5’11” 185 lbs
Nelson Kosch Nelson Kosch 6'0" | 145 lbs | WR Blair | 2025 NE | 2025 | 6’1″ 160 lbs
