You couldn’t have written a better script to cap off Hudson Spivey‘s extraordinary career at Pee Dee Academy. After a back-and-forth state championship thriller against Florence Christian, Spivey prevailed in overtime with a title-clinching rushing score. One of the most prolific and successful quarterbacks SCISA football has seen, Spivey developed to become a skilled and accurate passer with the confidence and poise to make timely plays. His quickness and strength on the ground added to his exceptional repertoire, and his leadership skills and commitment were noticeable especially in his senior year. Spivey will finish his Eagle career with an astounding 8,113 passing yards and 103 touchdown passes.
A two-way star on the line for First Baptist, Roy Maybank was an irreplaceable anchor for the Hurricanes in 2022. Maybank registered 55 tackles and a whopping eight sacks this season. A terrific athlete with the physicality to wrap up tackles and a commitment to excellence in all three phases, Maybank was the most valuable presence on the field this season for First Baptist. The edge rusher and center was dominant in swallowing up the run and pressuring quarterbacks and will be a major loss for the Hurricanes next season.
A veteran on the offensive line, Logan Locklear finished his high school football career with an exceptional season for Cardinal Newman. After committing to play at The Citadel over the summer, Locklear backed it up in the fall, using his stellar strength and footwork to open up holes for the Cardinal run game. Formerly a standout for West Florence, Locklear has a wealth of experience and the size to succeed at the college level.
Shining for the Trinity Collegiate Titans, Matt Warren delivered an excellent 2022 season to cap off his high school career. A matchup nightmare with his height and athleticism at 6-foot-6, Warren was dangerous in the receiving game while also providing impactful blocking for his offense. His superb abilities on jump balls alongside an outstanding work ethic will be missed next year.
Capped off by a magical November playoff run, Jew-el Huntley put on a show for the Florence Christian Eagles in 2022. A sensational athlete with the quickness and agility to make any play on the field, Huntley shined as a passer and runner on offense while dominating at strong safety defensively. He raised his game in the postseason, propelling the Eagles to the SCISA 3A state championship game alongside his brother Juels Huntley. Jew-el’s leadership and versatility will be difficult to replace for the Eagles as they look to make another run at the crown next season.
Highlights
A workmanlike star at the linebacker position, Will Helmadollar enjoyed a masterful season in 2022 with Ben Lippen. Helmadollar reads the snap especially well and displays a high motor to fly to the football and finish off tackles. He recorded 50 tackles, four sacks, and forced a fumble to go with an interception while also excelling on the offensive line. His veteran leadership and production were invaluable to the Falcons this fall.
