This has been known as one of the deeper quarterback classes in Mississippi’s high school history and for good reason. There are plenty of guys left available that can run a future college offense at multiple levels of play. Today, we will be highlighting some of the best quarterbacks that should be putting pen to paper in February for the second signing day.
Offers: Southwest CC, Pearl River CC
Throwing for over 2,812 yards and 37 touchdowns as a senior, Austin Goss Austin Goss 6’0″ | 190 lbs | QB Scott Central | 2023 State MS took home the 2A Mr. Football award but remains a bit of a sleeper prospect in recruiting circles. In addition to his success in the air, Goss ran for 531 yards and 12 touchdowns. While the senior quarterback may lack the prototypical size for the position, we are seeing more often than ever now that height has not been the biggest make or break factor for quarterbacks. This is a guy that has a big arm that can make all the throws at all levels of the field with great timing and touch. Goss operates well from the pocket, showing the ability to step up when the rush gets to him and handle reading a defense and go through progressions. With his winning history in high school to top things off, this is the kind of player that will make a college coach look very smart for taking a chance on him.
Offers: Morehead State, Mississippi State, Itawamba CC
One of the state’s leading passers, Itawamba’s Ty Davis Ty Davis 6’3″ | 205 lbs | QB Itawamba Agricultural | 2023 State MS passed for over 3,483 yards and 33 touchdowns throughout his senior campaign. Davis stands tall at 6’2″ 200 and already has the build of a college level quarterback. Davis is a smooth pocket passer who would fit a pass heavy system extremely well. With his big arm, Davis puts a ton of zip on the ball downfield and has excellent deep ball accuracy and timing. Mechanically, Davis is a really well polished prospect as well. He has a good throwing motion that fits tight to his body and can get the ball out quickly. While he may not be a speedy running threat, Davis shows the ability to run and use his size to his advantage in short yardage situations. Really talented player that deserves more recognition for his play over the last two seasons.
Offers: UT Martin, Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Akron, Southern Miss, South Alabama, Hinds CC
A December graduate looking for a home, Deljay Bailey Deljay Bailey 6’2″ | 185 lbs | QB Petal | 2023 State MS has some of the best natural arm talent left in the 2023 in-state class. Transferring into Petal for his senior season, Bailey flashed some big time potential in his final high school year. At 6’1″ 200, he has the size to play in a variety of systems at the next level. Bailey has one of the strongest arms in the state. This is the type of guy that can flick his wrist and have the ball sail 50+ yards downfield. As evidenced on his tape, Bailey throws some great deep balls and deep out breaking routes as well. He shows the ability to go through progressions and throw with anticipation of where guys will be. With the physical gifts he has, Bailey is bound to make a college coach really excited over the next 4 years.

Fresh off a state title, Paxton Thompson Paxton Thompson 6’0″ | 180 lbs | QB Jackson Prep | 2023 State MS was one of the most impressive quarterbacks in the MAIS this season. Throwing for over 2,636 yards and 32 touchdowns, Thompson had one of the biggest years of his young career. At 6’0″ 185, Thompson isn’t the biggest prospect, but has plenty of size to be a threat at the next level. He also has the ability to continue adding weight to his frame. As a passer, the senior has a quick release with little hitch or wasted movement to it. Thompson was responsible for a lot at Jackson Prep and showed the ability to read a defense and navigate through progressions. An accurate thrower, Thompson has great ball placement and can really thread the needle in some tougher spots. While he doesn’t have any offers yet, expect his recruitment to heat up prior to the next signing period.
Offers: Dean College, UVA Wise, Millsaps College, Mississippi Delta CC
With over 3,500 total yards and 42 total touchdowns on the season, Ty Murphy Ty Murphy 6’0″ | 180 lbs | QB Eupora | 2023 State MS is one of the best dual threat quarterbacks left in the 2023 class. As a passer, Murphy has a quick release and can let the ball rip downfield. He shows some impressive touch on intermediate to deep breaking routes and can get the ball out fast. Where Murphy’s real game breaking value is is in his running ability though. This is the type of guy that can score from anywhere on the field with the ball in his hands. Murphy shows great speed and burst in the open field and can make defenders miss when in space. He has perfected his ability to run option based run concepts as well. Murphy will have no shortage of opportunities to play at the next level. Sure would love to see him in a system that used him as a runner again.

Transferring over from Oxford High, Trip Maxwell Trip Maxwell 6’2″ | 185 lbs | QB Hartfield Academy | 2023 State MS shattered many single season records at Hartfield Academy this year. The senior threw for over 2,100 yards and 25 touchdowns, dominating the MAIS and taking Hartfield Academy deep into the playoffs. Standing at 6’2″ 200, Maxwell has good size for the position and can continue to add weight to his frame. As a passer, Maxwell operates well from the pocket and shows the ability to extend plays when the pocket collapses. Operating well in the play action game, Maxwell can let the ball sail downfield to his receiver. Maxwell has a powerful arm that can put a lot of zip on the ball at all levels of the field. What stands out most about his game is his ability to improvise. Maxwell is a scramble drill wizard who can create some huge plays by moving around defenders. Only holding two offers right now, expect some more teams to be interested in the Hartfield Academy prospect by signing day.
