Continue ReadingWe’re a few weeks away from a big 2023 rankings update, and I’ll be diving deep into rankings in the next week. While preparing for rankings, I’m compiling a list of players from each position I think may be due to move significantly in the rankings. As for the Quarterback position, there are some decisions to be made when it comes to rankings.
Please note – these rankings are based on college projections. There are amazing High School players that don’t project greatly in college.
Mason is an absolute DOG, but I have a few questions about his game and how it translates into college. For one, he was an amazing running QB this year, and he was able to gain yards on the ground against anyone in the state. Though, few college offenses will be similar to the one he ran at Cal.
First, let’s discuss Mason’s strengths.
Trajectory rnMason works incredibly hard during the offseason, and has vastly improved year-after-year. He’s picked up the new Cal offense extremely well after coach Pennington took the keys, and there’s no signs of slowing down for Mason. I think he could pick up a college offense very well
Fundamentals rnHe isn’t perfect in this regard, but he’s gotten extensive coaching over the years on the “little things” and it’s paid off tremendously. I love Mason’s quick release, and his overall footwork. It’s above-average and great for a High School QB, and I know he’ll continue to hone his skills in college.
Now for a few questions
Accuracy rnMason ran the ball quite a bit this season, and he’s a tad unproven passing the ball against elite defenses. Yes, he made the State Title game, and you have to be a pretty good and accurate QB to do that, but there were some passes against Belleville that simply didn’t hit the mark. To be fair, Bryce wasn’t perfect either, but Mason will need to improve his accuracy when heading into college, because the windows will be much tighter.
SystemrnI could see colleges be a little weary of Mckenzie because of the system he ran at Cal (and location). It’s a very QB-friendly system with plenty of opportunity to pass, but he also relied on the run a ton this season. I don’t think it’s fair to grade the Cal system the same as say, Zeeland West or Rochester Adams, but I expect coaches to take a close look at what he ran at Cal and if that could translate to college.
Overall, expect a rise in ranking. How much is yet to be decided.
Honestly, I’m behind on Dakota film, but I’m extremely excited to see what Hamby has done this season. If what I’ve been hearing is true, Hamby has shown vast improvement this season and deserves to be looked at for college offers. During Northwood’s camp during the offseason, the coaches there told me that Hamby was best in class at the showcase, and from what I saw, I believe it.
Dakota went 11-1 this season with an undefeated regular-season, and they were eventually taken down by Cass Tech. I’m looking forward to knowing Hamby as well as I do Mckenzie.
Highlights
Reeves is going to be a very, very, very, very interesting player to put the magnifying glass on. During Reeves’s first 3 years of High School, he attended Holland Christian, Kirk Cousin’s Alma Mater. The issue was that Holland Christian is not a good football program.
Dexter on the other hand, is a great program with top-tier talent. Reeves came in and started right away, and his stats show improvement with a much improved supporting cast. The question is- Will I see significant improvement from the Dexter Reeves Taylor Reeves Taylor 6’3″ | 185 lbs | QB Dexter | 2023 MI vs. the Holland Christian Reeves Taylor Reeves Taylor 6’3″ | 185 lbs | QB Dexter | 2023 MI ? This will be difficult to analyze, but improvement over the years will be an important rankings factor. I will start watching some full Dexter games soon.
