There are a lot of studs amongst this group around Mississippi. One of our guys was a state champion and the other was a straight up ball hawk. Let’s a take a look at what we have.
3A North Defensive Player of the Year, Jayden Walker
Jayden Walker is our defensive player of the year for the North. Walker is very versatile and can do a lot of different things on defense. He is a guy that can put his hand in the dirt, or he can stand up. He has good speed for his size. Not a lot of offensive linemen are going to be able to block him on the next level. Walker also knows how to be Johnny on the spot. He can pick up those fumbles and take them to the house for six points. Walker is under the radar, but you can expect that to change when he gets to college. He has nice size, and is a very strong kid. I can see him being an absolute stud on the group of five level.
3A South Defensive Player of the Year, Suntarine Perkins Suntarine Perkins 6'1" | 190 lbs | ATH Raleigh | 2023 State MS
Perkins was a straight up dog on defense all season. He recorded over 90 tackles, and had a few interceptions. Don’t let his offensive game this previous season shadow your thoughts of how good this kid is on defense. He showed that during the Mississippi Alabama All Star game. Every time Raleigh needed this kid to step up, he was ready for the challenge. He has a strong commit to Ole Miss. Look for him to be a fan favorite in Oxford. Perkins is a great kid who is also very humble. You probably wouldn’t be able to tell how humble he is after watching him torture running backs for forty-eight minutes. I can’t wait to see him play om the next level.
Honorable Mentions
Kendrick Boyd Kendrick Boyd 5'9" | 165 lbs | ATH Morton | 2023 State MS from Morton had seven interceptions this year. Boyd was a ball hawk every time the football was thrown his way. He is a guy that does not let many passes get completed in his vicinity. He’s a guy flying under the radar. Morton needed him to step up big on defense this season, and that is what he did. He has some good hips and reaction skills. When you are able to make the right guess you can make a lot of plays in the secondary. Boyd knows when to make the right move. He also plays the game with a lot of swagger. Look to continue to hear his name on the next level.
Sentario Willis Sentario Willis 6'2" | 185 lbs | DB Hazlehurst Highschool | 2023 State MS and Douglas Nelson have to be both be mentioned together. They played within a Hazlehurst secondary that recorded twenty-four interceptions. These guys were some absolute studs this season. They knew how to get the job done when the ball was thrown. Willis is a guy that loves to jump routes and guess. He also does not mind coming up to make tackles. Nelson is also another guy who’s aggressive and can help out in the running game. Nelson has a few division one offers, and Willis has several of JUCO offers. I don’t think high school is going to be the last time we hear their name. These guys know how to play football in the secondary.
