Ocean Springs finished the season with a 12-1 season making their way into the Final Four of the State Championships. The Greyhounds have produced some notable athletes that have played for NFL teams such as the Miami Dolphins and the Detroit Lions. Ocean Springs is a powerhouse in the south and is not done producing top-tier athletes. Here are some key athletes essential to the success of the program and will some athletes that will be cornerstones for the program come 2023.
Key Athletes
Bray Hubbard Bray Hubbard 6’2″ | 175 lbs | QB Ocean Springs | 2023 State MS is a one of a kind athlete. This season hubbard accounted for over 3,900 yards of total offense 41 TDs and even more on the defensive side of the ball. Hubbard’s contributions to this team were quite notable. Ever since starting his sophomore year he has delivered high quality performances and has led them to winning seasons. Hubbard is considered a 4 Star prospect who has received offers from programs such as Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Troy. Ultimately Hubbard will be attending Alamaba as he officially signed this earlier this week. He will be an athlete that is surely missed.
Will Smith
Will Smith
Will Smith was the team’s leading rusher behind QB Hubbard. Smith is only a sophomore but he has already displayed some incredible talent. Will Smith averaged over 9.5 yards per carry and was simply explosive with the ball in his hands. He averaged over 120 yards rushing per game and also had the ability to be a passing threat out of the backfield. This young stud will be formative to the Greyhound’s offense as they work to fill the void created by Hubbard’s departure.
Wyatt Finaly
Wyatt Finaly
Wyatt was a reliable receiver for the Greyhounds this past season and will see his role increase in the 2023 season. Wyatt Finaly was consistent when thrown the football. He got recognized as region 4-6A Second Team Receiver as he displayed his speed, hands and ability to get the football. There is no doubt that Wyatt has the opportunity to be one of the state’s top receivers if he continues this projection. He surely will be an athlete to watch this next season.
Moore was the Greyhound’s top tackler throughout the 2022 season. He collected over 105 tackles this season from his Middle Linebacker position and could be seen executing his assignments at a high level. In addition to his tackles Eric Moore Jr Eric Moore Jr 6’2″ | 210 lbs | LB Ocean Spring | 2024 State MS recorded 2 forced fumbles, 2 sacks, 16 tackles for a loss and an Interception. Moore was certainly a foundational piece to this defense that only allowed just over 200 points for the year. Moore has received an offer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College however I am certain that more offers will continue to come his way.
Highlights
Trace Carter Trace Carter 6’1″ | 200 lbs | LB Ocean Springs | 2024 State MS was the team’s second leading tackler and the most effective at getting tackles for a loss. Carter recorded over 95 tackles, with 25 of them being for a loss. The way he plays downhill and meets the play in the backfield is certainly some next level play. Carter will be returning next season as well and will be looking to repeat if not beat the performance he had this season. Carter is a tremendous defensive athlete with great self evident potential.
Kudos to Coach Pennock and his coaching staff for producing a top 5 program and a 4-star Alabama commit. Next season the team will be looking to return and make another run at the state championships with a new head coach as Pennock will be coaching elsewhere. Overall the team will be retaining most of its top playmakers on offense and defense however the main concern is how to replace the production that Bray Hubbard Bray Hubbard 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Ocean Springs | 2023 State MS brought to the team. Nevertheless. I am confident that the Greyhounds will continue to find success as a team.
