It turned out to be a thrilling game on Wednesday night with the Gold Team coming out with a 23-22 Victory over the Blue Team. For the Blue squad, Alex Collver Alex Collver 5'9" | 180 lbs | RB New Hartford | 2023 NY of New Hartford put up the first score of the game with a rushing Touchdown, the other two Touchdowns came from receptions by Utica Proctor’s Domante Cook. Scores for the Gold Team came from a run by Carthage’s Josh Bigelow and an Interception returned by Cazenovia’s Connor Adams. The game winning Touchdown was hauled in by Rome Free Academy’s Jack Lawless when he outjumped and outmuscled multiple defenders in the endzone. The game ended with an Interception by VVS’ own Matt Rossi. Here are the Best of the Best.
Brayden Shepardson Quarterback/Defensive Back from West Canada Valley proved that school size doesn’t matter as a player from the 8 Man Division took home the MVP award for the Gold Team. He showed his ability as a dual threat signal caller all night. Shepardson had velocity on his throws and was able to find the open man, when needed he showed off his running ability as he pulled the ball down and scrambled for positive yards consistently. At the next level Shepardson would make a solid Quarterback or Defensive Back for a D3 school.
Domante Cook from Utica Proctor took home the MVP award for the Blue Team by showcasing his talents as a Receiver and as a Running Back. As previously stated Cook had two Touchdown catches on the night. He proved to be sure handed and fast from the Wideout position. When he was used in the backfield he showed his quickness and ability to get to the edge in a hurry. Schools in the Empire 8 and other D3 New York programs should be all over him as he would be a great fit as a Receiver or Defensive Back at that level.
Colin White stood out as a Fullback/Running Back on the Blue squad. White had a successful conversion run in the game along with a handful of bruising runs. He showed off his ability to get downhill as a one cut and go type runner and when he has the ball he makes sure to finish physical through anyone in the way. White made me reminisce of the old Tampa Bay Buc days with Mike Alstott the way he ran the rock. He would be perfect as a short yardage back, Fullback/H Back or even as a Linebacker for an Empire 8 team.
Josh Bigelow a Running Back/Linebacker from Carthage had his name called out continuously throughout the night. He put in a score on the ground for his team and had a handful of chunk plays on the ground for their offense. Bigelow was tough and decisive with the ball in his hands. Dependable is a word you would use to describe him on the field as you always know your gonna get something positive when he gets the ball. He would make a solid Slot, 3rd Down Back or even Defensive back for a D3 program if a team picked him up.
Jedrek Olkowski a Lineman out of Cazenovia was also impressive for the Gold Team during the showcase. Olkowski played bigger than his size which measures in at 6’2, 210 pounds. Looking at him on the field he plays closer to 6’4 with his wing span and has great feet. Last night he had some big plays making stops in the backfield. He could easily play at the next level and in the right D3 program they will quickly pack on size in the weight room. Olkowski could be an athletic Defensive End or Offensive Lineman in college.
