Starting on varsity as a freshman is a feat in itself; starting at quarterback as a freshman on varsity is a whole nother ball game. These guys have done it and done well. They come in all different shapes and sizes but have all been effective in their first year of high school ball. Most are still developing physically and have a ton of room for growth over the next few years. Keep a watchful out for them as they’re only going to get better year by year. With that being said, here’s who you need to know!
Derek Zammit, 6′ 170, DePaul Catholic
- A natural throwing off-platform.
- Fakes are defined & cause second-level defenders to bite, opening up easy throwing lanes.
- Has enough velocity behind his throws to fit the football into tight windows.
- Arm slot can be altered at any point.
- Plenty of athleticism to evade the rush and buy enough time for second & third-level throws.
Mason Geis, 6′ 160, Immaculata
- Enough arm talent to push the field vertically.
- Displayed polished footwork throughout.
- Timing and accuracy is quite impressive.
- Has proven that he’s willing to sit inside the pocket and take a shot from opposing rushers.

- Terrific ball placement on all three levels of the field.
- Release is short and to the point.
- Is a full-field scanner who knows when to take a shot against 1 on 1 coverage.
- Dangerous when the pocket breaks down as he keeps his eyes up looking for someone downfield to throw to.
- Shows a rapid operation time on called RPOs.
Paul Jones Lll Paul Jones Lll 6'1" | 170 lbs | QB Weequahic | 2026 State NJ III, 6’1″ 160, Weequahic
- Hips and feet are in line with one another.
- Running ability forces defensive ends to keep their shoulders square to the line of scrimmage.
- Has enough arm and anticipation to throw his receivers open.
- Displayed poise and moxie regardless of what was going on around him.
- Has a gamer-type feel to him where he can simply make something happen out of nothing.
John Franchini, 5’9″ 170, Mainland Regional
- Timing is outstanding and leads to him hitting his targets in stride.
- Has some “gunslinger” type traits to his game.
- Can make something happen with his legs if nothing is open downfield.
- Glides up into the pocket with edge rushers squeezing the protection.
- Knows when to take a little mustard off his throws.
