That was the case for four receivers across the state this season that raised their profiles with impressive production in their final seasons. Here is a look at four receivers that raised their stock with big senior seasons.
Akili Mattox
A big-bodied receiver Mattox was a mismatch for defenders during a senior season in which he caught 33 passes for 700 yards and eight touchdowns. The 6-2, 200-pound Mattox is a physical receiver that showed an ability to make contested catches during his breakthrough senior season. While the size stands out, Mattox also displayed good speed and run-after-the-catch ability averaging 21.2 yards per reception. The combination of size and speed made Mattox a challenge to defend at the high school level and an intriguing prospect at the next level.
Jalen Lueth Jalen Lueth 6'3" | 155 lbs | WR Ames | 2023 IA
Few players in the state did more to stand out in their final season than Lueth who flourished in a pass-heavy offense at Ames. Lueth more than doubled his pass-catching production from his junior season leading Class 5A in both receptions and receiving yards making 86 catches for 1,339 yards and 13 touchdowns. A lengthy 6-3, 175-pounds, Lueth has long arms and impressive ball skills and body control. During his breakthrough season, Lueth showed the ability to stretch the field vertically as well as high pointing the ball to make contested catches.
Christian Janis
Perhaps no player needed a big senior season or delivered more in their final season than Iowa City West senior Christian Janis. Janis sustained a season-ending injury in the opening game of his junior season, leaving him with just one season to put himself on the radar as one of the top pass catchers in the state. That is just what Janis did this fall ranking fifth in Class 5A with 739 receiving yards and scoring 12 touchdowns on 36 receptions. A long-strider, the 6-foot-4, 180-pound Janis showed an ability to win at the top of routes and displayed strong hands during his stellar senior season. Janis possesses impressive straight-line speed making him a weapon in the return game, and is a solid route runner.
Garrett Gregoire Garrett Gregoire 5'10" | 175 lbs | RB Liberty | 2023 IA
Gregoire wasn’t a regular in the Iowa City Liberty lineup until his senior season but made the most of every opportunity in his final season. An inside receiver, Gregoire used his excellent change of direction and quick acceleration to catch 43 passes for 832 yards and nine touchdowns. A dangerous run after the catch receiver with good hands, the 5-8, 160-pound Gregoire wasn’t afraid of contact, evident by the 38 tackles he made from his safety spot.
