Division 3
DeWitt defeats Mount Pleasant 56-49 (3OT)
I’m extremely impressed by the Capital Area Blue this postseason. Even on a down year, DeWitt wins the District Championship and earns a chance for a Regional title. As for Mount Pleasant, they just can’t seem to make a postseason run. DeWitt has a legit shot at another State Title run. They’ll actually be favored against Linden, but will face an extremely tough opponent in either Muskegon or Zeeland West.
Linden defeats Fenton 35-7
I’m very surprised by this blowout. Linden is a stronger team than I expected, and they can compete with DeWitt. I don’t know much about either of these teams, but I know Linden has done well against good teams.
Muskegon defeats Coopersville 40-14
Coopersville made this game interesting for a while, but Muskegon pulled away. The OK-Blue has done well in the postseason, but the OK-Green is simply stronger. At this point, Muskegon has to be the favorite to make the state championship out of Regions 1 and 2. They will face rival Zeeland West for a semifinal opportunity!
Zeeland West defeats St. Joseph 36-18
This was an interesting matchup. St. Joseph dominated their schedule but faced an easier schedule than West. This seems like a very special Zeeland West team with a lot of varsity returners. This team has amazing coaching with a great senior class. Muskegon and Zeeland West are the favorites to make Ford Field.
Mason defeats Jackson 34-12
Mason is underrated, and they have been all season! This team has an elite run game and great defense. This was the expected outcome, and they’ll have a chance to earn a rematch against either Brother Rice or Detroit MLK.
Trenton defeats Carlson 17-7
Carlson is just not built for the postseason, while Trenton earns a trophy and a chance at another one.
Brother Rice defeats Walled Lake Western 30-22
This was one of the marquee games of the weekend! With a big media presence, Brother Rice dethroned WLW. From what I saw, Brother Rice led most of the way. This team is battle-tested, and the Catholic Central League remains undefeated in postseason play.
Detroit MLK defeats Allen Park 46-15
MLK is the D3 Championship favorite and easily handled Allen Park. Led by top-end talent, Detroit MLK has another elite team. They’ll be favored against Brother Rice, but honestly, on paper, the Regional round will be easier than the semifinal round for King.
Division 4
Whitehall defeats Fruitport 51-26
This Whitehall team seems so special. The senior class has led this team to an 11-0 season, and they just won against a strong Fruitport team. Now, they’ll face South Chrisitan, who snapped GR Catholic Central’s 40+ game win streak this season.
South Christian defeats Unity Christian 35-20
The Sailors add another achievement to their incredible season. This time, it’s an amazing victory against the 2021 runners-up. The unstoppable force of South Christian meets the immovable object Whitehall this weekend, and I can’t wait to see the outcome!
Edwardsburg defeats Niles 24-17
This is a surprising outcome. Earlier this season, Edwardsburg defeated Niles 45-7, which shows a lot. Either this was a down week for Edwardsburg, or Niles played their hearts out.
Hastings defeats Charlotte 23-13
Honestly, I don’t know too much about either of these teams. Hastings only loss has been against undefeated Whitehall, so I fully expect the game against Edwardsburg to be something special.
Goodrich defeats Freeland 10-9
Apparently, this had a wild finish. Before the season began, I thought Freeland was destined for an incredible season. Goodrich has just spoiled their season and goes on to face an elite OLSM team.
OLSM defeats Lamphere 35-0
No surprise here. Even though OLSM “struggled” in the regular season, they faced the most difficult schedule in D4 by a longshot. This team is battle-tested, and they are, at this point, the State Champ Favorite.
Riverview defeats Tecumseh 53-30
Riverview is making a run! They earn a trophy with their 53-30 shootout win. Here, they score a season-high while giving up a season-high.
Divine Child defeats Clarenceville 30-24 (2OT)
Double overtime! Divine Child is surely the more mainstream team here, but Clarenceville is obviously no joke. This was a hard-fought war that had Divine Child on top. Next week against Riverview will be a true test. Earlier this season, Divine Child lost to Riverview 34-28.
