And a lightly used sophomore.
Those four from the CSRA, Grand Strand and Pee Dee each earned well-deserved game balls for excellent second-round games in which they helped lead a ticket to the state quarterfinals.
Kelvin Hunter Kelvin Hunter 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB West Florence | 2024 State SC LB, West Florence
With one of the top linebackers in the state done for the year, Hunter had little choice but to take on an even bigger role. In the absence of Franklin Emerson Franklin Emerson 6'0" | 220 lbs | ATH West Florence | 2024 State SC , the fellow Knights junior (pictured) had seven total tackles (five solo) and three more tackles to loss against Myrtle Beach to boost his season total to 20. It was the third time this year he’s recorded three or more tackles for loss in a single game.
Scott Saylor Scott Saylor 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Carolina Forest | 2023 State SC QB, Carolina Forest
If you thought Saylor’s five-touchdown, 312-yard performance in the first round against River Bluff was good, wait until you see what he did in the second round against Goose Creek. The Carolina Forest senior passed for 382 yards – his second-highest total of the year – and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 22 yards and another pair of scores. It was the fifth time this year and fourth consecutive game he’s put up at least four combined touchdowns.
Tyler J Smith Tyler J Smith 6'1" | 200 lbs | RB Barnwell | 2023 State SC RB, Barnwell
The senior’s ridiculous season continued against Andrews. While Barnwell’s offense was held relatively in check, Smith casually put up another monster game. He rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns and took a reception 73 yards for another score. For those of you not keeping track at home, that gives him 47 total touchdowns this season (45 rushing, one receiving, one passing).
Raleigh Jett RB, South Florence
When coach Drew Marlowe provided Prep Red Zone with his preseason depth chart, Jett’s name was fourth at tailback, and it had a question mark next to it. The sophomore showed in a round-two win over Bluffton that he’s yet another weapon for a South Florence team already full of them. Jett rushed 14 times for 178 yards (12.7 ypc) and two scores. The rushing total was more than a third of his total for the year.
