The Scots slay the Rams
One of the best stories in Division 1 had to be the Caledonia Fighting Scots. Ever since Derek Pennington took the helm at Cal, this program has been on a massive upsurge. Last season, they placed 2nd in the OK-Red, losing to Rockford but advancing to the D2 Regional Finals, where they were smacked by TC Central.
This year, enrollment placed them in Division 1, and they’ve made their presence known. Caledonia placed 2nd in the red once more, and had an extremely disappointing outing against Rockford during the regular season. Going into their divisional playoff matchup against Rockford, the Rams were heavy favorites. But just last week, Caledonia showcased incredible defense, defeating the Rams in 2OT 14-13. Caledonia is now a favorite against Grand Ledge to win the region and advance to the Division 1 Semifinals.
Grand Ledge Magic
Can’t talk about storylines without talking about Grand Ledge. This team went into the playoffs a good 7-2, but they had to go up against 8-1 Brighton, a widely feared team with a ton of playoff points. Grand Ledge pulled off the immaculate upset against Brighton, defeated their rival, Holt, for the District Championship, and now their cinderella story continues against Caledonia.
Rochester Turned heads
The Rochester Falcons wildly outperformed expectations. Nobody saw them beating Stoney Creek in the 1st-round, and nobody saw them going into the half leading Adams. Even though they lost to Adams last weekend, this team played to their full potential.
Belleville Head Coach Jermain Crowell Suspended
Without a doubt, Belleville is the most talented team in Michigan. The school’s suspension of Crowell is unprecedented, and the allegations against him (illegally recruiting players) are severe. We’ll see what the MHSAA’s investigation concludes, but this is an extremely important long-term story to keep watching.
Cass Tech runs the Gauntlet
District 1 of Region 1 of Division 1 held three state-championship contenders. Very interesting that Cass Tech was the team to make it out.
Forest Hills Central is who we thought they might be
FHC went into the D2 playoffs as one of the hightest-ranked teams, but many questioned their strength of schedule. With their 33-21 victory against Mona Shores, those critics have been silenced. FHC will be favored against East Lansing this weekend, with the winner advancing to the Semifinals.
Groves heats up
Defeating their rival at the end of the season to barely get into the playoffs, then beating them again to win the divisional round? Groves must be feeling awfully confident. Great run for those Falcons.
DeWitt never left
Even with a massive 2021 class and an up-and-down season, DeWitt finds themselves in position for yet another semifinal appearance. I find it incredible that they defeated Mount Plesant in 3OT, and they’ll now be favored against Linden. Some teams truly never rebuild; they just reload.
