Has quickly risen up my board as the season has gone on as one of the best quarterbacks in South Dakota, that being he did not shy away from a single challenge this year when it came to guarding any player. When watching the tape of him we be was not only great at man coverage but when he was in man coverage you could see that he had an amount of confidence in him, that being that he is just fearless when it comes to playing coverage against anyone. It was impressive to see this in action, he did not allow many defenders especially to get over the top of them and he applied for press coverage at every chance we could meaning that receivers would be thrown off the Rhythm and not able to redo everything that they did. Really showed me that hard work determination and a lot of towns can arise you up a list of top cornerbacks, with that he lines up at the top of the list as the top cornerback in South Dakota this year.
2. Tim Bishop Tim Bishop 6'2" | 170 lbs | DB Harrisburg | 2023 State – Harrisburg
Bishop all throughout the year was simply falling out every chance that he could get, that being he was able to do some great things at the quarterback position being one of the best or arguably the best man coverage defender the entire year. the biggest tool that he has in his Arsenal that lends him on this list is his physicality that he can lay down on other receivers, without drawing penalties or being an aggressive player, he gave them pressure and made them work for every single yard that they were going to work. it was great to see how determined he was on the field and how much energy he played with, he loved to go out there and play and was simply a leader for his team and the defense overall, where he would have big games making interceptions or he would do the little things. Making tackles and trying to stop anyone from making a big play. No matter how he did it Bishop wanted to influence the game and that landing at the 2 spot on the list.
3. Aiden Heimann Aiden Heimann 5'11" | 155 lbs | DB Aberdeen Central | 2023 State – Aberdeen Central
Heimann that I said would have a big year when it came to this year and he surely did not disappoint, being a lockdown corner for an Aberdeen defense that was simply elite and taking another step this year to be one of the better defenses of the state. A big part of their defensive drop was due to their secondary being so great, a big part of that is what I’m and brought as a defensive Superstar on the team, he was able to be a Zone Hawking cornerback who is able to read quarterbacks and replays like they were a book happening in real time where he can make a play on the ball and sometimes made interceptions that look simply spectacular. I like seeing what he does on the field since he is not a flashy player and does not like to be the center of attention, what he does love to do is play and play with heart, and his play backs it up and that’s what he does look do the talking. Overall this was great to see him rise up on the list of quarterbacks that I thought would be great before the season and he surely showed how great of a cornerback he was for his team.
4. Tyree Shorter Tyree Shorter 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Sioux Falls Lincoln | 2023 State – Sioux Falls Lincoln
Shorter is an extremely fast cornerback who can apply press coverage and stick to offensive players like blue, not give them a single inch of breathing room. while he might struggle in man coverage compared to other quarterbacks, what he does so well is make sure the person he is lined up against in man coverage will not be able to make a big play, since he does not like to give up passes over the top or give up anything underneath. he was a key part of its defense this year they needed his performance to solidify themselves as one of the top units in South Dakota and without shorter it would look very different for their pass defense. he was an anchor for the team, someone who would always want to win and make the big play to do so at even if it’s sacrificed him looking bad or having a bad game in comparison, truly a team player and someone that college recruiters look to fill in a slot cornerback roll. he has a college-ready town and is eager to learn and work, lady came and forth on the list.
5. Jonah Hunter – Tea Area
Hunter is a lesser-known defensive back prospect that has some talent in his bag and I think he developed into one of the best quarterbacks in South Dakota for a few reasons. first Hunter has a great ability to read what’s going on in the field, even past the line of scrimmage which translates into having a high defensive IQ and the ability to have a great game sense, being able to see Cadence’s and see what formation teams are going to go to more often than not. Second, he’s break tackles, while defensive backs start supposed to be grey tack as he seems to take it to another level not allowed to get to have anyone get away from him add anytime and always finishing the play no matter the cost. Finally, he’s an extremely hard worker, I’ve seen his type throughout the year and he is definitely made improvements in not allowing these mini-deep balls to be thrown at him and changing what he’s going to do if something isn’t going to work in the game he’s not going to be stubborn to let it happen, he will change it to adapt. overall he’s a player that has a high ceiling or right now might have a lower floor compared to others, but I think with some refinement he could be a top-tier defensive back and one the college should look to have.
