Some are at the point where losing a game could be a permanent trip home for the year. Those same teams could also win out and find themselves still in the mix. Let’s take a look at this week.
Starkville vs Germantown
Yes we have mentioned Starkville a lot. Let’s not forget at the beginning of the season a lot of us picked them to be back in the North Half playing for a state title in November. They have some food talent on both sides of the ball that can help them make the push they need to make throughout this season. I think they can win these last two games and see themselves in the playoffs. Trey Petty Trey Petty 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Starkville | 2024 State MS and Braylon Burnside Braylon Burnside 6'1" | 180 lbs | ATH Starkville | 2024 State MS have their hands full. I think they can get the job done.
Germantown has been playing good ball this year as well. I just don’t think it will be good enough to get them into the playoffs. These last two weeks are going to be tough and their last two opponents may be have a little too much.
Gulfport vs Ocean Springs
Both of these teams will definitely be in the playoffs this year. The fight now is to see who will have the best position in region 4-6A. This is going to be a good game.
Ocean Springs is loaded. We all know that. They have Brayson Hubbard on offense who is one of the most explosive players in the state. Anytime you have a guy like him leading your offense you have a chance to win. It’s his willingness to do whatever it takes that gets their offense over the hump. JP Coulter does his thing on those islands. When Bray Hubbard Bray Hubbard 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Ocean Springs | 2023 State MS isn’t running around making plays with his legs he has some receivers to go to.
Ocean Springs has been playing good defense this year. That is the x factor of their team. The whole defense. They need to play good defense in order to make it to the state championship this year.
Gulfport is a team who can run and throw on offense. They are very balanced and they play hard. They have what it takes to go up against this Ocean Springs team and come out with a win. They play good defense as well. It is crunch time and you can believe that they are going to do what they can to be second place in this divison.
Clinton vs Tupelo
You can bet your last two dollars that this is going to be a good game. Tupelo has won the division, but Clinton wants to continue to make that hard push in the playoffs. Both teams have good players and know how to make plays.
Tupelo is known to put up a lot of points so Clinton needs to be ready to play good defense. Jeremiah Harrell Jeremiah Harrell 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Tupelo | 2024 State MS is a dog at quarterback and he will be slinging perfect passes from the pocket. JQ Witherspoon JQ Witherspoon 5'7" | 160 lbs | WR Tupelo | 2024 State MS is going to make his presence known as well. They also have a freshman running back who is coming in with some fresh legs. Zay Alexander Zay Alexander 6'6" | 315 lbs | OL Tupelo | 2023 State MS and Michael Wallace Michael Wallace 6'3" | 250 lbs | OL Itawamba Agricultural | 2024 State MS will be holding things down in the trenches for their offense. It will be interesting to see how they go up against Clinton’s very talented defensive line.
Tupelo has a very good defense as well. Shamaar Darden Shamaar Darden 6'1" | 170 lbs | ATH Tupelo | 2024 State MS is a beast that knows how to cover and he lays the wood. Tristan Jernigan Tristan Jernigan 6'2" | 210 lbs | LB Tupelo | 2024 State MS is a general at linebacker and he also does not mind making big hits. Tupelo will definitely be ready.
Clinton is going to be very solid on offense, but their defense is definitely going to show up and play. It is their defensive line that I love to see. TJ Spann is a grown man down in those trenches and he shows up to play big time every week. He is going to be the key to this game. If he can get to the quarterback then Tupelo may have to make some adjustments. It’s any given Friday at this point. This will be a great week.
